Thomas to Remain a Wizard
Wizards match Bucks offer sheet
July 28, 2004
Washington Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has matched the offer sheet extended to Etan Thomas by the Milwaukee Bucks and will retain the 6-10 center.
“Etan is a developing big man who has proven he can rebound, block shots and defend in this league,” said Grunfeld. “The energy and enthusiasm he brings to the floor every night is contagious, and we’re excited that Etan will continue to be a valuable part our roster.”
Per NBA rules regarding restricted free agents, the Wizards were allowed 15 days to match the offer to keep Thomas, who had his best season in the NBA in 2003-04.
Thomas was originally acquired by the Wizards from the Dallas Mavericks on February 22, 2001 in a trade that included Christian Laettner, Courtney Alexander, Loy Vaught and Hubert Davis in exchange for Juwan Howard, Calvin Booth and Obinna Ekezie.
Last season, Thomas, who appeared in 79 games, averaged 8.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game for the Wizards, who saw the center block three or more shots in a team-best 20 games. His 123 blocks last season was the sixth best total in the Eastern Conference (18th in the NBA).
The 2003-04 campaign also saw Thomas pull down a career-high 16 rebounds versus Miami and score a career-high 21 points versus Boston. He finished the season with 12 double-doubles, the last coming against Miami with 11 points and 16 rebounds. For his three year career, Thomas is averaging 6.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game.
