Skullerund aims to spring a surprise

Norway coach Tor Ole Skullerund believes that, although his team face a stern task in their bid to reach the semi-finals of the 2004/05 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, the Scandinavian side are still capable of springing a surprise in Northern Ireland.
Brief reign
Skullerund took charge only last year but has already made his mark, first steering Norway to second place behind Austria in qualifying round Group 12, then prevailing in Russia in the Elite round, his charges remaining unbeaten to see off the threat of the mini-tournament hosts, Ukraine and Lithuania and win the section by a point. Skullerund's players must now overcome England, France and first-time qualifiers Armenia to progress from Group B at the finals.
'No better time'
"I feel this tournament couldn't have come at a better time for us," the coach told uefa.com. "Several of our key players have been playing in the first team of their respective clubs and have responded by playing really well. But I don't know if that is good enough to beat France and England, whom I regard among the favourites to win the whole championship."
Youthful exuberance
One of Skullerund's first moves on assuming control was to introduce some younger players, with a significant portion of the squad born in 1987, making them eligible for next year's U19 competition as well. "That move has been a success," Skullerund acknowledged. "There are a number of 18-year-olds in the squad, such as Rosenborg [BK] midfielder Per Ciljan Skjelbred and [SFK] Lyn [Oslo]'s Bjarne Ingebretsen. Both have made their mark in the Tippeliga this year, and should have a bright future."
Familiar formation
All of Norway's teams, from the U17s right up to the seniors, play exactly the same way, with head coach Åge Hareide favouring a 4-2-3-1 formation that has been implemented at every level. "We play like the senior side, but with some variations," Skullerund confirmed. "Like Hareide, I like to play with a big centre-forward. [IK] Start striker Jesper Mathisen is my first choice, although he is suspended for the first game against Armenia."
Striking options
Norway have finalised their preparations in the week leading up to the finals, with the squad coming together in Jessheim on 12 July and playing one last warm-up match - against first division Stabæk IF - the following day. Skullerund then had the task of cutting down his preliminary party from 20 players to 18, having said he wished to examine all his options, particularly up front, before making his final decision. "We chose to include some extra forwards in the [preliminary] squad," he said. "We wanted to look closely at our striking situation before choosing who to go for."
Team togetherness
Although England and France look the favourites to seal a semi-final place from Group B, Skullerund believes his side's unity could yet tip the balance in their favour. "I was pleasantly surprised we qualified," he admitted. "The [Elite round] group in Russia was very tough, but I was very impressed with how my players coped, they deserved to go through. The boys are working well together as a team."
