England earn dramatic triumph
Saturday, 23 July 2005
England produced a dramatic comeback to pip Norway to a place in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship semi-finals thanks a header from substitute David Wheater six minutes from time.

Dramatic turnaround
Needing a victory to progress, England took an early lead at The Showgrounds through Matthew Mills, only for Karim Aoudia to swiftly level. Martin Hunter's team looked to be heading out when Petter Hanssen put Norway on front eleven minutes from time but Dexter Blackstock forced in after a corner to level the scores. With seven minutes remaining Wheater headed in another corner to secure England's progress to a last-four meeting with Serbia and Montenegro on Tuesday. In the other concluding Group B game, France defeated Armenia to win the section.

Three changes
England coach Hunter introduced James Morrison, Matthew Fryatt and Ryan Jarvis in his starting lineup following the 1-1 draw with Armenia on Wednesday, while his Norwegian counterpart Toe Ole Skullerund made four changes from the side defeated 3-1 by France on Matchday 2. Hunter's changes initally proved the more effective, Morrison crossing following a quick third-minute corner and Mills beat Joachim Heier with a looping header.

Hanssen threat
Norway responded quickly, with Hanssen skipping away from his marker down the left and putting in a dangerous ball which England goalkeeper David Martin pushed on to his crossbar. In the 23rd minute, Norway did level. Jesper Mathiesen intercepting Mark Noble's clearance and finding Aoudia inside the area for the striker to prod beyond Martin. England strove to regain the upper hand, with Lee Holmes dribbling past two defenders before finding Jarvis, who turned into space but sent his shot just past the post.

Further opportunities
Jarvis was denied by Heier just before half-time, although although Jesper Mathiesen and Vidar Nisja threatened for Norway early in the second half, before Mills had another chance but this time the defender's aim was wayward.

Hanssen strikes
Hunter introduced Wheater with 17 minutes left, hoping to use the defender's height to unsettle the Norwegian defence, but the tactic looked to have backfired as Norway struck again six minutes later. Hanssen cut in from the left, beat Martin Cranie, and shot past Martin to seemingly ensure his team's progress.

Breathless finish
A minute later, however, England drew level again with substitute Blackstock reacting fastest to prod his side back into contention after Morrison's corner had caused confusion. With seven minutes remaining, another corner undid the Norwegians, Lee Holmes delivering a perfect right-wing cross for Wheater to beat Heier and head England into the last four.

Rytter brought home by Brøndby

Thursday, 21 July 2005
Having learned their UEFA Champions League second qualifying round opponents this week, Danish double-winners Brøndby IF have strengthened their squad ahead of tonight's midnight transfer deadline with the signing of Thomas Rytter.

Three-and-a-half year contract
The 31-year-old former Danish international right-back arrives from VfL Wolfsburg on a three-and-a-half year contract. His final competitive Wolfsburg appearance came in their UEFA Intertoto Cup first round first leg against SK Sturm Graz earlier this month, but he remains eligible for Brøndby's European fixtures.

'In no doubt'
Rytter, capped four times between 1996 and 2003, has previously played for Lyngby FC and FC København. He said: "I always wanted to end my career in Denmark, and was in no doubt when the opportunity to go to Brøndby came up - there was no reason to talk to other clubs."

Tbilisi trip
Brøndby, who will begin their Champions League campaign on Tuesday with a trip to Georgia to play FC Dinamo Tbilisi, have made two other signings from Bundesliga teams, Swedish midfielder Marcus Lantz from FC Hansa Rostock and striker Kim Christensen from Hamburger SV.

Kahlenberg replacement
However, coach Michael Laudrup says there could be another addition in midfield. "We will probably need a replacement for Thomas Kahlenberg," said the coach, referring to the AJ Auxerre-bound player.

København bring in Bergdølmo

Friday, 22 July 2005
FC København have signed Norway defender André Bergdølmo on a free transfer from BV Borussia Dortmund.

Royal success
The capital club are looking to build on a year of success, which saw them secure second place in the Danish Superleague to earn a UEFA Cup berth. They added the Scandinavian Royal League trophy this summer, and 33-year-old Bergdølmo's arrival on a two-year contract will add experience to a youthful lineup.

Ambitious club
The veteran has played for AFC Ajax and Rosenborg BK and is keen to make an impact in Denmark. "The club are in the race for the championship every year, and they want to progress in the UEFA Cup. I would like to contribute to fulfilling these ambitions," he said.

Fifth arrival
Bergdølmo becomes coach Hans Backe's fifth summer signing, following Jesper Christiansen, Michael Gravgaard, Marcus Allbäck and Peter Ijeh - all of whom are aged 27 or over. "André is a complete player," Backe said. "I've known him a long time. He's good with the ball - but first and foremost he's a good leader." København started the season with a 1-0 win against Aalborg BK on Wednesday.

Djurgården dominant in Sweden
Saturday, 23 July 2005
By Jan Juhlin

Djurgårdens IF remain the dominant force in Sweden with the Allsvenskan season entering its second half.

Larsen on fire
However, question marks remain about how much longer ten-goal Danish striker Sören Larsen will stay with Djurgården, with FC Schalke 04 still interested. The leaders have signed Swedish international Mattias Jonson from Norwich City FC as a possible replacement while utility player Tomas Backman has been loaned to GIF Sundsvall.

Transfer central
Second-placed Helsingborgs IF, four points adrift following back to back wins against Örgryte IS, have also been busy. Brøndby IF forward Babis Stefanidis and defenders Andreas Jacobsson and Peter Christiansen, of Southampton FC and FC København respectively, have all signed. Left-back Christian Järdler has moved to Turkish side Gençlerbirligi SK.

Welcome distraction
Champions Malmö FF are also four points off top spot but the third-placed side lost 1-0 to BK Häcken on Thursday, allowing their opponents to close to to one point. Malmö have the welcome distraction of the UEFA Champions League, starting with the visit of Maccabi Haifa FC on Tuesday in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie.

Litmanen arrival
The club have signed Sweden forward Anders Andersson and Finnish legend Jari Litmanen, while Andreas Yngvesson has left for strugglers Landskrona BoIS. Häcken, meanwhile, have resisted the temptation to dip into the transfer market.

Surprise loss
A further two points behind Häcken, IFK Göteborg are still in with a shout. However, they stumbled last Wednesday with a 1-0 loss against newcomers Gefle IF. The club have also lost forward Peter Ijeh to København while defensive rock Fredrik Risp has joined Gençlerbirligi, although midfielder Martin Ulander has arrived from AGF Århus.

Svensson trio
Kalmar FF, IF Elfsborg and Hammarby IF, in sixth, seventh and eighth, are also in with a chance of a high finish. Elfsborg, in particular, will look to the newly arrived Svensson trio to help them continue their ten-match unbeaten run with the 30-year-old forward Matthias and 29-year-old midfielder Anders back from English football, and veteran goalkeeper Håkan returning from a spell in Cyprus.

Djuric inspired
Last year’s runners-up Halmstad BK find themselves languishing in ninth. Despite the efforts of 20-year-old midfielder Dusan Djuric, the club has struggled although they are five points ahead of Landskrona who occupy the relegation play-off position. Gefle are two points closer to trouble but have hope after seven points from their last four matches.

Lovenkrands in Riverside summit

Rangers forward Peter Lovenkrands is in discussions with Middlesbrough over a possible move to the Riverside Stadium.
The Denmark international travelled to Teesside to open talks with Boro manager Steve McClaren.

The 25-year-old recently rejected the opportunity of a move to Portsmouth but has been told he can leave Ibrox by Gers boss Alex McLeish.

Lovenkrands has played in every pre-season game for Rangers so far and the money freed from his departure would allow McLeish to add to his squad.

Olympiakos must race to sign Iversen

ATHENS, July 25 (Reuters) - Greek champions Olympiakos Piraeus face a race against time if they are to sign Norwegian international striker Steffen Iversen.
The 28-year-old has been targetted by new Olympiakos coach Trond Sollied as the man to provide more goals.

But with his current club Valerenga set to play Finnish side Haka in the first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round on Tuesday, the Piraeus club are reported to be eager to seal the deal quickly.

If he plays on Tuesday he would become ineligible for Olympiakos's Champions League campaign.

According to reports in the Greek media, the former Tottenham striker has already agreed personal terms but a difference of 100,000 euros ($120,000) in the fee to be paid remains a sticking point.

Iversen has acknowledged that he is in favour of a move to Greece.

'It would be sad to leave Valerenga but Olympiakos are a major team playing in the Champions League,' he said.

'It will be my last chance to play for a team in a major tournament.'

Maccarone back, Lovenkrands no go

Massimo Maccarone has been given the chance to resurrect his Middlesbrough career after failing to agree an extension of his loan deal at Siena.
Boro's £8.15million record signing has been included in boss Steve McClaren's squad for the upcoming four-team pre-season tournament in Portugal.

McClaren told Boro's official website: 'Massimo has come back having failed to agree a loan move to Siena. He is coming to Portugal and it is now up to him to win back a place.'

Maccarone spent last season on loan with Parma and Siena and was set to stay in Serie A with his career on Teesside apparently all but over.

He scored 16 goals for Boro but has not figured in McClaren's plans since the end of the 2003/4 season when he scored against Manchester City.

Meanwhile Boro have rejected the chance to sign Danish winger Peter Lovenkrands from Rangers after he failed to impress during a two-day trial.

The two clubs had already agreed a £600,000 deal in principle but the 25-year-old did not do enough to persuade McClaren to pursue the deal.

McClaren told The Sun: 'We have had a look at Peter over the last few days and he is a very good lad.

'However we aren't interested in doing anything at the moment. Peter has gone back up to Rangers and we will keep an eye on him with the possibility of something happening in the future.'

Rommedahl told to buck up ideas

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley has warned Danish winger Dennis Rommedahl that he is under severe pressure to perform this season.

Rommedahl turned in an eye-catching display at Loftus Road last night as Charlton, with a hat-trick from England Under-21 striker Darren Bent, cruised to a 3-0 win over QPR.

But Curbishley has strengthened his midfield options during the summer with the signings of Darren Ambrose and Alexei Smertin and Charlton are still being linked with a move for Lee Bowyer - all of which leaves Rommedahl with a tough battle on his hands for regular first-team football.

'Denis was very up and down last year and never managed to establish himself. He's come back to pre-season a lot fitter and a lot sharper but he's got competition,' said Curbishley.

'Ambrose can play there, we've got the young boy Lloyd Sam who can definitely play there and is desperate for a chance. Jerome Thomas can play there too, so there's a bit of rivalry and a lot of competition in that midfield area.

'Dennis has to respond because if he doesn't someone will take his place. I've brought Ambrose in and Lloyd is desperate for a chance.'

Rommedahl, enjoying a free role as part of an experimental five-man Charlton midfield, was involved in Bent's first strike and was then denied a goal of his own when Rangers' on-trial keeper Wayne Henderson pulled off a brilliant reaction save.

Curbishley is unlikely to start with five across the middle for most games in the Premiership - he just wanted to see how Bent coped on his own up front.

And his new signing from Ipswich answered those queries with a hat-trick.

'He's never played up there on his own so I wanted to have a look to see if he could. Although I know Darren likes to play with someone up there to take the load off him a little bit, I think he showed us what he's about,' said Curbishley.

'He was very sharp. He's very direct when he has to be, unselfish on other occasions. He'll pass it if someone's in a better position and he took his goals very well.'

Curbishley has brought in seven new faces and is still in the market for more, though whether Bowyer will make his return to The Valley is up in the air.

'I know if Lee was to leave Newcastle I think he would like to come back to London but that has not been a secret. We will have to see and the transfer market has a domino effect and there has not been much so far,' said Curbishley.

'We have done a bit of business and I am very pleased but if I can do a bit more I will.'

經過一個不穩既球季,希望你係05/06打好d

Ljungberg set to sign new contract

Arsenal fans lamenting Patrick Vieira's sale to Juventus will be heartened by the news Freddie Ljungberg is set to sign a new deal.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is almost certain Ljungberg - whose contract expires next summer - will extend his stay at Highbury by agreeing fresh terms.

'It's 99 per cent there. I'm very pleased because we lost Patrick and we could not afford to lose many players. Stability is important,' Wenger told the club's official website.

Ljungberg joined Arsenal for £3million from Halmstads in September 1998 and is a key component of Wenger's squad, scoring 68 goals in 265 matches for the club.

The 28-year-old Sweden midfielder, who has helped Arsenal win two Premiership titles and three FA Cup finals, has been anxious to settle his Highbury future.

He was the Gunners' outstanding player during the winter months last season but his campaign was hampered by injury and migraines.

As one of Arsenal's double heroes, the 49-cap international will delight supporters should he decide to stay following Vieira's £13.7milllion move to Serie A.

Gronkjaer set for medical at Stuttgart

MADRID, July 27 (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid's Danish international midfielder Jesper Gronjkaer is on the verge of joining VfB Stuttgart after being given the go-ahead to travel to Germany to undergo a medical with the Bundesliga side.
'As yet there has been no agreement between the three parties,' Atletico said on their website on Wednesday.

'But given the desire that the player has shown to change team, Atletico Madrid have allowed him to travel to Stuttgart to be examined by the club's medical staff.'

Atletico said that the 27-year-old winger had put in a transfer request because he had been unable to adapt to life in Spain and said a move to Germany would allow him to be closer to his home country.

'The club understands that given the circumstances he will not be able to perform to the best of his ability and we will negotiate his departure,' Atletico said.

The former Chelsea player signed a 2 1/2 year deal with Atletico in January for a reported fee of 2 million euros ($2.41 million) after a brief and unsuccessful spell at Birmingham City.

Despite some promising early performances for Atletico, he failed to make a real impact and his season was cut short when he cracked a bone in his right leg at the start of May.

Atletico, who have already signed Bulgarian midfielder Martin Petrov, Serbia aand Montenegro striker Mateja Kezman and Argentine forward Maxi Rodriguez in the close season, said that if Gronkjaer left the club they would look to recruit another player to replace him.

Real Zaragoza's Argentine midfielder Luciano Galletti is the favourite to replace the Dane.
