SOLANO SET FOR RETURN
NEWCASTLE United are on the brink of another major coup - bringing Nolberto Solano back to Tyneside. The Peruvian international is locked in talks about an emotional return to the club he loves - and which he left in January 2004 for Aston Villa.
Newcastle have had a £1.5 million bid - the same price he left United for - accepted by Villa, and all that remains is for the two parties to discuss personal terms, and for Solano to pass a medical.
If the transfer goes through, Villa will take James Milner on a season-long loan, as part of the deal.
United are now trying to finalise the move ahead of today's midnight transfer deadline.
The signing of Solano would be massive news in any other week - but if his return is overshadowed by the Michael Owen deal, it will still be hugely popular among supporters,
Many fans feel the team's attacking problems can be traced back to Solano's departure, and the Peruvian is still widely regarded as one of the best crossers of the ball in the Premiership.
The prospect of Solano providing the bullets for Owen and Alan Shearer will have United fans licking their lips - and could herald the return of attacking football to St James's Park.
However, supporters will have to wait to see Solano playing in a black and white shirt again.
If the deal does go through, he will have a three-match suspension to serve following his recent sending-off against Portsmouth - meaning he would not be able to make his second United debut until, ironically, the Portsmouth away game on October 1. |
