Newcastle United's efforts to re-sign Nolberto Solano look set to end in failure.

Not content with landing Michael Owen on deadline day, Magpies manager Graeme Souness had set his sights on Solano to add balance to his midfield.

It had been suggested Aston Villa were prepared to strike a deal with Newcastle, provided they secured James Milner on loan in exchange, but The Magpies were only interested in a straight cash deal and this looks set to end any possibility of a transfer being agreed.

"We made a bid, but it has been refused and that is the end of it," Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd told Sky Sports News. "We wish Nobby and Aston Villa all the best."

With time still left before the window slams shut until January, Shepherd added there could still be a chance of talks reopening.

"You never know," he added. "I said I loved my wife when I left this morning, so who knows?"

Villa's desire to secure Milner's services on loan would appear to be a sticking point and Shepherd insisted the youngster would not be heading out of St James' Park.

"Not a chance," said Shepherd in response to questions about whether Milner could be used as a makeweight in the deal

Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has ruled out a deadline day swoop for Aston Villa winger Nolberto Solano.

The 30-year-old Peruvian had been linked with a return to the north-east but after having one offer for Solano rejected by Villa, Shepherd has decided not to increase his bid.

Newcastle sold Solano to Villa in January 2004 for £1.5million and he has gone on to score eight goals in 49 Premiership appearances for O'Leary's side.

He originally moved to St James' Park from Boca Juniors for £2.5million seven years and scored 29 goals in 172 Premiership appearances for the club.

Solano seeking Villa exit Aug 31 2005
NOLBERTO Solano was set to rock Villa today by demanding a move back to Newcastle United who he sees as a "bigger club".
Villa were trying to keep hold of the 30-year-old midfielder - who is into the final year of his contract - by demanding their money back.
But David O'Leary was resigned to losing a player who he feared might "sulk" if he stood in his way.
O'Leary transformed the player into a cult figure since his 1.5million move to Villa in January 2004 - and the fans would be devastated.
But the club's player-of-the-year was due to tell O'Leary this afternoon that his heart was set on returning to St James' Park where he played 172 league games over six seasons.
Solano informed manager O'Leary last week that he would be keen to move to Newcastle if an offer was accepted, and events have moved on since.
Solano was understood to have already told the club's assistant boss Roy Aitken face to face that he wanted to leave "for a bigger club".
The 75-times capped player has been a massive success at Villa but wants to join up with pals Alan Shearer and Albert Luque on Tyneside.
Solano sees Newcastle as a massive step forward from Villa and a disappointed O'Leary admitted he could do little to stand in his way - but only if Newcastle paid the 1.5million asking price.
Reports that Newcastle had made anywhere near that offer were way off the mark this afternoon, but they had time on their side to up the stakes.
O'Leary enquired about James Milner as a possible makeweight but was told that the former Leeds prodigy is not available, even on loan.
The Villa boss was still ready to try and coax Graeme Souness into allowing him a player on loan before tonight's midnight deadline, but his chances looked slim.
O'Leary admitted he had little chance of hanging on to Solano with his mind set on a move. He said: "I won't let him go to Newcastle unless we get our money back, or a player on loan. He would love to go to Newcastle. The problem we then have is that if we stop him, does he then go into a sulk? That's the way of it with players today.
"He sees what Newcastle are doing with Michael Owen and the size of the club and he wants to be a part of that. He says he wants to go to a 'bigger' club."
O'Leary, meanwhile, is still in negotiation with Leeds for 27-year-old Norwegian midfielder Eirik Bakke but the clubs were way apart on wages.

Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has revaled that Aston Villa have rejected the club's bid for former Toon favourite Nolberto Solano.
Shepherd said "the bid has been rejected" and added that "it's the end of the matter as far as we're concerned".
He did add a hint though that a deal could still be struck but that would only appear likely if Villa are prepared to negotiate down their 1.5million asking price.
