Solano poised to return as Milner heads for Villa
Nolberto Solano was last night locked in talks with Newcastle officials after Aston Villa gave the Peruvian permission to make a shock return.
David O'Leary is understood to have agreed to sell the winger back to United for £1.5m, the same price he paid for Solano 18 months ago - on the condition he can also sign James Milner on a season-long loan deal.
The Villa boss is keen to take Milner to the West Midlands, having worked with the talented teenager during his time in charge of Leeds.
With the 19-year-old having fallen down the Magpies' pecking order following the arrivals of Albert Luque and Michael Owen, it is an arrangement which would appear to suit all the parties involved.
Solano, who has also been the subject of interest from Liverpool this summer, was understood to be discussing a move back to the North-East last night. United are confident that a deal can be done ahead of the midnight transfer deadline.
The South American's return would be welcomed by Newcastle supporters, who feel the club's decline began when Solano was controversially sold to Villa in January 2004.
Having been deemed surplus to requirements on Tyneside, the former Boca Juniors star has continued to impress in the Premiership and remains one of the top-flight's most creative players. Yet with his contract set to expire at the end of this season, Villa are willing in cash in.
There is no question that, having recruited Owen to play alongside Alan Shearer, Souness could utilise his talents. And, although 1.5m was considered a good price for Solano when he left, it seems the club is willing to reimburse Villa for a player who will turn 31 in December.
The winger started 158 Premiership fixtures during his five-and-a-half years in the North-East and was a pivotal part of the Newcastle side which thrived under Sir Bobby Robson.
That he was talking to the club on the same day as Owen joined was fitting, for it was during the radio interview in which Souness first revealed his interest in the England striker that he admitted he had tried to sign Solano in January.
Should Solano complete his transfer, United fans will have to wait to see him in action again as he has a three-match suspension to serve following a recent sending-off against Portsmouth.
Although Milner has impressed Souness since he took charge at St James's Park almost 12 months ago, his first-team prospects appear bleak in the short-term, especially if Solano should rejoin the club.
