CHINA BOOST FOR LI TIE
By: Scott McLeod
David Moyes believes Li Tie's chances of returning to the first-team frame for Everton will be boosted by the international matches the midfielder is playing this week.
Li Tie completed the full 90 minutes of China's 2-0 defeat to Serbia & Montenegro on Saturday and he is expected to play a key role in Wednesday night's friendly with Bulgaria.
Li Tie has not figured in a competitive game for the Blues this term since finally recovering from the shin problems that kept him sidelined for 18 months.
Moyes admits the Chinese international still has work to do to regain the form and fitness that made him a first-team regular during 2002/03.
But he believes these games for his country will help the 28-year-old.
He told evertonfc.com: "He is much fitter now but I still feel he is lacking the sharpness necessary. He’s played games for the reserves but it has been a tough time for the player. That injury was a bad one and it has been a really hard time for the boy.
"He has played a lot of reserve games and he is training but because he has been out for so long you can see he is still not himself and back up to fulll fitness. Yes he is fit, but I still feel he needs more games before we really consider him to play for the first team.
"It’s good for Tie to be playing international football. We know how important he is for China but he is also important for Everton. A couple of seasons ago he played very well but that injury has stopped him. He does need more real competitive games to get himself sharp. If he plays for China that will be great because it will give him the chance get more fitness and I will keep my eye on him to see how he does."
The player himself is delighted to be representing his country again. He was boosted last month by his involvement in China's friendly against Germany. But the chance to return to China made this week's matches extra special.
He continues: "This is the first time I have played in my homeland since my leg was broken 20 months ago. I am a little bit nervous, but meanwhile I am very confident to play for my country in my homeland.
"I was called by the national team manager Mr Zhu Guang Hu four weeks ago to play the friendly match with Germany. I played 90 minutes of that match and I felt really happy and also got a lot of benefits from that match. Now I desperately want to play as much as I can.
"As a footballer the whole thing is about playing the match. I am still waiting for my chance to come at Everton - I know I have to be patient.
"As my manager says I still need more competitive matches to get my fitness. For that reason I think the national match is really important for me, that will be benefit me at club level.
"The time has been really tough for me since I was injured, but I never gave up. It was the biggest challenge of my career and I am going to fight for it.
"I feel there are still plenty of opportunities for me. I want to take them all, but it relies on what I am going to do, I will give every thing I can to get my best performance back." |
