NZ U-20 captain Jack Pelter has recovered from an ankle injury and signed a one year contract with Sunderland

New Zealand Under-20 football captain Jack Pelter is feeling very relieved after securing a one year deal with English club Sunderland.

Pelter says Sunderland manager Roy Keane was impressed with his skills and it was more a matter of recovering from an ankle injury and passing a medical, which he says involved a whole barrage of tests, even heart checks.

The Christchurch 20-year-old had a temporary one month agreement while he waited to recover from the ankle he injured at the Youth World Cup in Mexico last month. Now he has a contract in place, the teenage soccer star will be pushing for a regular place in the first team squad.

Pelter says he cannot afford to be star struck, though it was tough for the first few weeks being in the same company as senior players he had watched on television back in New Zealand. He says the top players are so good they make it easy for others around them.

Kiwi Youngster to join Ryan's Rovers

April 1, 2008

Cameron Lindsay (left) in action for New Zealand U-16 Development side in the National Youth LeagueAUCKLAND - Teenager Cameron Lindsay leaves for England this week to sign with Ryan Nelsen’s Blackburn Rovers.

The New Zealand U-16 defender has landed an all-expenses-paid four year scholarship with the English Premiership Club.

After impressive performances in the Nike Cup finals in Manchester, visiting scouts from Premier League club Everton offered the Central United player a trial.

Kiwi footballing icon Wynton Rufer – the head of the Wynrs academy which Lindsey has been a part of since age 6 – arranged further trials at Blackburn and Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers.

Lindsay was offered scholarships to both clubs but chose Blackburn because of its Kiwi connection with captain and All White Ryan Nelsen spending time with the promising Northcote College youngster on his visit to the Lancashire club.

"I talked to Ryan for about an hour," Lindsay told the North Shore Times, “He gave me a signed shirt and told me just to enjoy myself."
Nelsen will play an important mentoring role for Lindsay as he studies and trains at the club.

Lindsay will begin in Blackburn’s U-16 side before progressing into the U-18s and is targeting the reserve team by his third year.

"After that it’s the senior side," Lindsay said.
