Ryan Nelsen's new five-year deal with Blackburn Rovers has anchored his place as the highest-paid New Zealand sportsperson.

Blackburn Rovers insiders believe the new contract puts the Rovers captain on 55,000 to 60,000 a week, which equates to about $NZ8 million a year.

With the average All Black contract thought to be worth about $250,000, the Christchurch footballer could be earning more than an entire All Blacks squad of 22 players.

Other top Kiwi earners are Indy car driver Scott Dixon on $4.5m and NBA bench-warmer Sean Marks on $1.7m, while golf caddie Steve Williams is believed to have picked up 5 per cent of Tiger Woods's $US9.9m winnings on last year's United States PGA Tour, which adds up to $NZ630,000.

Nelsen's new contract vindicates his decision to leave a promising cricket career and focus on football.

"They thought I was mad," Nelsen told The Press in 1999. "Their reaction was, 'What's the future in soccer?"'

Eight years later, the "mad" footballer earns considerably more than the entire Black Caps squad or the best-paid cricketers in the world.

Nelsen arrived in Blackburn as a virtual unknown from DC United in the American Major League Soccer in January 2005, and his initial 18-month contract was upgraded to a three-year deal six months later.

With Nelsen's growing credibility in the Premier League and a substantial offer from Portsmouth on the table, Rovers again broke open the contract last July for a four-year, $4.5m-a-year deal.

"I don't think people thought too much of me and there was little expectation of me," Nelsen told the BBC last week after signing the new deal.

"Looking back, I think I surprised a few people, but, yes, I could never have imagined three years later I would have been signing this type of deal."

Nelsen forfeited New Zealand's friendly against Wales last month to give his hamstring injury the best possible recovery for the upcoming English season.

Chris Killen has savoured the Parkhead roar after making his debut for Scottish champion Celtic and the All Whites striker is now looking to become the second New Zealander to play in Europe's Champions League.



The 25-year-old – who transferred in the British close season from Edinburgh club Hibernian – earned the plaudits of Celtic manager Gordon Strachan for his 27-minute performance off The Bhoys' bench in the scoreless draw with Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premier League (SPL) first round on Monday (NZ time).

Killen told The Press on his way to Celtic training yesterday that it was "brilliant" playing in front of "around 60,000-odd when I was used to 12 or 14,000 (at Hibs).

"It's been a long time coming. It was in the back of my mind that I had been in the gym for the last six or seven months after my Achilles injury, but I'd overcome that and now I'm at a club like this."

Killen said he was looking no further ahead than Celtic's next SPL match against Falkirk this weekend but he admitted the Champions League qualifier against Spartak Moscow next Thursday was a big incentive.

If he takes the pitch in Moscow, he will follow in the footsteps of recently-retired All Whites captain Danny Hay, who played for Leeds United against Barcelona in a Champions League tie in the Nou Camp stadium in 2000.

Killen can hardly wait. "I had a little taste (of Europe) with Hibs in the Intertoto Cup trying to qualify (for the Uefa Cup). But this is the Champions League, it's the big one. We've got the first leg away in Moscow against Spartak. It's a really tough draw for us, they're top of the league and halfway through their season. It's the draw no-one wanted, but we've got them and we are going to go over there and do all we can."

The Champions League is a far cry from Wellington's Island Bay where Killen started his career. He "dreamed, like any kid", of playing for Liverpool but he played in the New Zealand national league with Miramar before heading to Britain to join Manchester City as a teenager.

He represented the Kevin Keegan-coached City in English football's second tier before moving down the road to Manchester club Oldham.

But his career took off last year after joining Hibs where he led the SPL goalscoring charts with 13 strikes before he was struck down with the Achilles heel injury in January.

Welsh-based England Championship club Cardiff City made overtures to the Kiwi, who was on the brink of signing before Celtic stepped in and dangled a three-year contract some British sources estimated could be worth $1 million a season.

The decision between Cardiff and Celtic was a no-brainer for the tall front-runner, who has scored 15 goals in 26 All Whites starts.

Killen said Celtic was everything he imagined a big club would be. "I'm really, really enjoying it. I've just moved through to Glasgow so it's a bit easier for me now instead of doing the 50 mile drive every day."

He said Celtic was "a massive place" and the "fan base is massive too". "The city here is divided, it's either Celtic or Rangers. Out in the street there's always someone looking to tell you what they think. It's hard to get away from it. But it's what I came for and it's what I've got to expect."

Killen had been a first-choice forward at Hibs but Celtic has seven first-team strikers and competition is fierce. His team-mates include Dutch international Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Polish striker Maciej Zurawski, the two starters against Kilmarnock, plus Socceroo Scott McDonald and Scottish international Kenny Miller.

"It's one of the biggest squads in the league and one of the biggest I've been involved with. It's tough going (to get a start). But you've just got to keep working hard and chances will come."

Killen said he was enjoying Strachan's management style and felt his new gaffer was "a very positive" coach who was not averse to telling his players when they had done well. "Maybe I am not used to it. I've had managers who were quick to tell you were rubbish the first chance they got. But (Strachan) is really good. He's always driving you, but he also gives you a pat on the back."

He remains committed to playing for Ricki Herbert's All Whites "as often as I can". But he said he also had to be realistic. While he expected to be available for key World Cup qualifiers, it was not feasible to fly "10,000 miles around the world, and play (for the All Whites) and then try and get back for the next league game".

Killen said with such large squads at big clubs like Celtic, a player missing too many matches on international duty could lose their club place "and there's a possibility they might not play for the rest of the season".

"I love playing for my country, but you have to weigh up your options."

He hoped New Zealanders understood that. "Ricki does. He's quite understanding as to what games he needs us to play in."

Herbert regularly rings Killen and the striker is in touch with All Whites team-mates David Mulligan (who plays in the English Championship for newly-promoted Scunthorpe) and Leo Bertos, the Perth Glory midfielder, who is "a good friend" from their Wellington days.

Killen has also noted Ryan Nelsen's progress at Blackburn Rovers and hopes the steadily growing number of Kiwis in the British leagues "will heighten the profile of football back home in New Zealand".

                            Born inBritain, but raised in New Zealand, Pelter was spotted at the Under-20World Cup in Canada when he battled with Mexican strikers to score NewZealand's only goal at the tournament in a 1-2 loss.

He was offered a trial on Wearside, playing pre-season games against Scunthorpe and Berwick.

Theformer Christchurch Technical player has now been offered anopportunity to stay on Wearside for a season in a bid to furtherprogress.

Pelter impressed coach and former Manchester Unitedplayer Roy Keane, and All Whites coach Ricky Herbert - who coachedPelter in the New Zealand A team - said Keane possibly saw something ofhimself in Pelter.

Keane said at the time he was impressed with Pelter's physical presence in the team.

Pelteris the first New Zealand player to make a leap from the domestic NewZealand Football Championship to the biggest league, and will be onlythe fifth Kiwi to play with the top English players. Others includedLee Osgood (Ipswich Town), Danny Hay (Leeds United), Ryan Nelsen(Blackburn) and Simon Elliott (Fulham).

From Canada, Pelter was initially set for a trial period at Leeds United. His mother lives in Morley, just outside Leeds.

Bornin Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, Pelter moved to New Zealand at the ageof nine with parents Jeff and Karin, and was quickly identified byCanterbury and New Zealand youth team selectors.

At 15 he had a stint at Bolton Wanderers and Knights boss Chris Turner took him to Chelsea and Swansea.

In2005 he was added to the Canterbury United squad and after United namedhim defender of the year he was picked for the New Zealand A tour toVietnam and captained the under-20 side in New Zealand's first everseries win in Australia.

TheCentral Coast Mariners have scored a morale boosting 5-0 win overOceanic challengers New Caledonia at Budgewoi’s Frank Millington Ovaltoday, one week out from their opening match of the new HyundaiA-League season.
First half goals from Nik Mrdja and Adam Kwasnikwere added to by Sasho Petrovski, Damien Brown, and Mrdja again in thesecond stanza, as the Mariners saw off a stubborn challenge from a NewCaledonian side that will begin their quest for a 2010 FIFA World Cupberth in eight days time.
The Mariners will take heart from whatwas an utterly dominant display from minute one to minute ninety, madeall the more satisfying after goal scoring contributions from keymarksmen Kwasnik, Mrdja and Petrovski.
Furthermore, fit againmidfielder Greg Owens played out the entire second half andmanufactured several goal scoring chances, while Socceroo icon TonyVidmar continued his recovery from recent injury and illness concernswith an assured forty-five minutes in central defence.
MarinersFootball Manager Lawrie McKinna used all but four of his 22-man squadthroughout the course of the match, with only injured defender PaulO’Grady and absent youth internationals Bradley Porter, Andrew Redmayneand Danny Vukovic failing to make an appearance at this uniquelyinternational event.
"The park was in reasonable nick, but it wasquite bumpy and sometimes it was hard, but overall, we scored fivegoals and whether it’s New Caledonia or not, it’s a national team and Idon’t think they had one shot," said Mariners Football Manager LawrieMcKinna.
"Everybody did their bit, there was some great footballand maybe a bit of over-passing at times because we could, but it was agood hit out before the season."
Mrdja’s opener came about aftersome solid groundwork by midfielder Andre Gumprecht, who fired in aprecise cross from the right hand touchline that was eased home by theMariners’ number nine.
The Mariners were desperately unlucky notto be two goals to the good by this early stage, after defender NigelBoogaard underlined his value from set pieces by forcing a pair ofdesperate goal line clearances from Tom Pondeljak’s corners.
Midfieldace Mile Jedinak was forced from the field with only 19 minutes on theclock due to a slight knee concern, with John Hutchinson introduced asa precautionary measure.
Following his introduction, Hutchinsonasserted his influence in central midfield, and along with goal scorerKwasnik was one of the Mariners’ best throughout the match.
AfterMrdja nodded home his second from a Kwasnik cross following Petrovski’sstrike early in the second half, substitutes Matt Simon and Browncombined to complete the rout in the 79th minute.
Simon held offseveral defenders and showcased some delightful touches beforeproviding an inch-perfect centre for Brown, who duly slotted home fromclose range.
At the other end, Mariners custodian Matthew Trottwas a virtual spectator, with sole New Caledonian strike optionPoulidor Toto and second half substitute Luther Wahnyamalla failing toregister a single shot on target throughout the match.
Indeed,this was an assured, comfortable and controlled performance from theyellow and navy – one that augurs well for their third Hyundai A-Leaguecampaign.
"Overall it was good, we’re very happy with the run andvery happy that Budgewoi Football Club put this on today, because atshort notice they’ve done a very good job," said McKinna.
"Basicallyeverybody is available apart from Paul O’Grady – big Mile Jedinakpulled up sore in the first 15 minutes so we’ll have to see how he isthrough the week but we’re happy with the squad we’re going to have topick from for the Sydney game."
The Mariners’ third HyundaiA-League campaign will officially begin in seven days time, when theytravel to the Sydney Football Stadium to take on southern rivals SydneyFC on Friday, 24 August. Kick off is at 8pm.

QUEENSLANDRoar were held to a 1-1 draw by the Solomon Islands national team atRichlands tonight in what was a tough encounter for Frank Farina’stroops.
The game was Roar’s last pre-season match before theserious business of the Hyundai A-League starts against Adelaide Unitednext Saturday (August 25th) at Suncorp Stadium.
Frank Farina waspresented with a few late selection headaches, notably with youngdefender Ben Griffin who was a late casualty after reporting flu-likesymptoms during the day. With a number of other players carrying minorknocks the Roar boss called upon trialists Victor Fenehia and JontiRichter to sit on the bench.
Also missing was speedy forward TahjMinniecon who was nursing a bruised foot, but midfielder MassimoMurdocca made a welcome return in the centre of midfield.
Againstan athletic and lively Solomon’s side Roar enjoyed the bulk of theearly play but Airton Andrioli’s team made the Queenslanders work hardfor every ball as they pressed and harried for possession.
DespiteRoar’s domination the Soloman Islands opened the scoring in the 19thminute with a simple but nicely worked goal. Powerful forward ComminsMenapi connected forcefully with a pin-point right-wing cross andheaded convincingly past Liam Reddy in the Roar goal.
Brazilianstriker Reinaldo almost forced the equaliser on the half hour but hisdownward header from Matt McKay’s swirling free-kick was well saved bySolomon’s ‘keeper Fred Hale.
Sasa Ognenovski was next to go closefor the home side as the half time whistle approached, but hiswell-directed header from McKay’s corner was well turned away by Hale.
Farinarang the changes at the start of the second period, making foursubstitutions. There was an immediate impact and a lively Roar werelevel in the 48th minute through Ante Milicic’s precise finish from 18metres after neat work from substitute Simon Lynch.
Roar wereagain dominating but didn’t create another clear-cut chance untilmidway through the half. Brazilian duo Marcinho and Reinaldo combinedneatly with the latter firing a powerful drive across the face of goalbut agonisingly just wide of the post.
The action dwindled towards the end but Coach Frank Farina said the game served its purpose for his side.
“Weexpected a tough game and that’s how it turned out. The Solomon Islandswere well organised and made it difficult for us but as an exercise itwas certainly useful as far as we’re concerned,” said Farina.
Roarplayers will mix with fans at the Queensland Roar Family Fun Day to beheld at Roma Street Parkland this Sunday (19 August; 10.00am – 3.00pm),before entering into their final week of training before the bigkick-off.

PHOENIX DOMINATES ALL WHITES WORLD CUP SQUAD

AUCKLAND - Eight players from Ricki Herbert’s Wellington Phoenix squad have been named in his All White squad for the Oceania FIFA World Cup qualifiers in October.

All three Phoenix goalkeepers make the cut, with U-20 stopper Jacob Spoonley making his first full international squad alongside his Wellington teammates Glen Moss and Mark Paston.

Goal scoring hero from the All Whites’ last match – a 2-2 draw in Wales - Shane Smeltz is another Phoenix player to be included while the Hyundai A-League also has a ninth representative in Leo Bertos, who has been in fine pre-season form for the Perth Glory.

Seven players will return from Europe for the home and away matches including a predictable return for Blackburn captain Ryan Nelson, and Celtic’s Chris Killen. Simon Elliot, David Mulligan and Chris James will join them on the plane from Britain while Kris Bouckenooghe and Ivan Vicelich return from their Belgian and Dutch clubs respectively.

Waitakere’s Jeff Campbell keeps his place in the squad that travelled to Wales – and is one of three players – along with Canterbury’s Andy Barron and Auckland’s James Prichett – from the NZFC in Herbert’s squad.

Andy Boyens and Duncan Oughton return from Major League Soccer commitments in the US and Canada, and Jarrod Smith will also return from the US where he is close to finalising a deal with a new club.

Danny Hay’s international retirement leaves the captaincy temporarily open, while the last two places in the squad will be announced at a later date.
