Phoenix striker Shane Smeltz eager to make the cut as an over-age player in the Oly Whites for the Beijing Olympics

Elation from Phoenix footballer Shane Smeltz over his inclusion in the New Zealand Under 23 Oly Whites squad for Beijing.

Smeltz is one of five players over the age of 23, although only three can make the eventual squad to travel. The other four are Chris Killen, Ryan Nelsen, Simon Elliot who are all playing in Europe and Tony Lochhead from the Phoenix.

Smeltz says for the moment he is just delighted to have another chance to play for his country.

Who gets to play is likely to depend on who can get release from their clubs and Smeltz says he is still yet to ask the Phoenix. He says he is concentrating hard on pre-season and he will have to sit down with them and sort it out.

The 25-strong squad will be reduced to 18 for the tournament.

AUCKLAND - All Whites defender Andy Boyens has moved from Toronto FCto fellow Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit New York Red Bulls.
A first-round pick in the 2007 MLS Draft, Boyens played 23 games forToronto last season - starting 21 - before being waived by the clublast month, and heading to New York for a trial.
Boyens (24) has been a fixture in the All Whites’ starting lineup intheir FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign after winning the second ofhis five caps in an impressive performance in the 2-2 draw againstWales in Wrexham last year.
The Red Bulls are looking to add depth in central defence, althoughBoyens could also be used as a right back when New York employ a threeman back-line, given he performed the role in the All Whites 4-1 winover Vanuatu.
Boyens left Toronto not long after being joined there byinternational team-mate Jarrod Smith. Smith has played four straightgames for Toronto, since scoring on debut in a 3-2 win over the LAGalaxy.

SIMON Elliott won't have any problem being released for the Olympics because his Premiership club has just sacked him.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson axed the All Whites international yesterday with seven other players Carlos Bocanegra, Jari Litmanen, Philippe Christanval, Ian Pearce, Michael Timlin, Ismael Ehui, and Bjorn Runstrom.

The Cottagers narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League with a last-day win at Portsmouth.

Hodgson's decision to axe Elliott who didn't play for the club last season makes a further mockery of Olywhites coach Stu Jacobs' decision to select him for Beijing. Elliott was named alongside Blackburn's Ryan Nelsen and Celtic's Chris Killen.

Of the three over-aged players for the Olympics' under-23 tournament, only Killen has bothered to front for Ricki Herbert's All Whites team since he took charge in 2005.

Nelsen and Elliott have not worn the white shirt since the 2003 Confederations Cup.

Jacobs' decision to select them ahead of the likes of Ivan Vicelich the All Whites veteran who always put his country before his club has been an unpopular move.

Nelsen, the Blackburn skipper, has the form and class to warrant selection but Elliott has none.

But last night Jacobs defended the selection of the player Fulham have ditched.

"He is one of our higher profile footballers he's played in the Premiership," Jacobs said. "He played about 12 reserve-grade games at the end of the season so he's been playing."

Fulham was dumped out of the FA Cup by lower league team Leyton Orient on Elliott's debut in the 2005-06 season and he was not sighted in the first team again after a 4-0 loss to Arsenal, a 3-1 loss to Everton and a 2-1 loss to Sunderland.
