EXCLUSIVE: Wellington Phoenix marksman Shane Smeltz missed the birth of daughter Scarlett to book a World Cup play-off.        But his sacrifice has potentially huge benefits for football across the Tasman.

The latest addition to the Smeltz family arrived on Friday as dad was preparing for his country's qualifier with New Caledonia.

Smeltz'stwo goals in a 3-1 win booked a future date with the fifth-placed Asianteam and also confirmed a spot in next year's Conferations Cup.

Hosts Tahiti headed for Egypt

Tahiti, hosts of the OFC U-20 Championship, have been crowned Oceania champions. They thus become the first ever island nation from Oceania to qualify for a FIFA field football event, in this case the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt next year.

After an opening draw against New Caledonia, the Tahitians, under former France international Lionel Charbonnier, went a goal down to favourites New Zealand in their second encounter. Yet the visitors were reduced to ten men just before half-time, and Tahiti equalised with a cracking goal before scoring the winner in the 89th minute.

In the final round of matches, with New Caledonia and the hosts level on points, Tahiti's opponents Fiji were reduced to nine men, and the hosts again ran out 2-0 winners. New Caledonia twice went into the lead against New Zealand, but were twice pegged back, and the eventual 2-2 draw eliminated both teams.
