Warnock rejects Butt speculation

Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock has rejected claims he is hoping to bring Newcastle's Nicky Butt to the club.

The midfielder, 30, spent last season on loan to Birmingham after failing to establish himself at St James' Park.

"I've not spoken to Nicky Butt and I've not thought about him," Warnock told the Blades' official website.

"With the wages I've seen mentioned I'd want three players in. People can turn up at the ground and meet him if they like but there won't be anybody there."

JAMES Milner will be back on Tyneside next week for pre-season training ready to stake his claim for a place in Glenn Roeder's team.
Milner, who signed for the Magpies in the summer of 2004, spent the bulk of last season on loan at Aston Villa after moving to the Midlands on transfer deadline day.
Villa boss David O'Leary has been keen to make the move permanent, with some reports suggesting signing Milner on a permanent deal was the Irishman's main priority this summer.
But the former Leeds starlet has been in contact with Roeder, and the manager told him he would be happy to have him fighting for a place at St. James' Park next season.
And with Michael Owen out injured, Alan Shearer having retired and Michael Chopra now with Cardiff City, Milner's ability to operate as a striker will give Roeder a boost.
Roeder said: "I have already met James, and I have told him I am very happy for him to stay here.
"He told me that he knows nobody can be guaranteed first team football, but all he wanted was a fair opportunity and he is happy at what I told him.
"He has been away at Aston Villa for a year, and let's hope that even though he is still only 20 he comes back better for the experience and a lot more mature and assertive."

Diouf met the France international and his advisors yesterday to determine whether he was interested in a transfer to the Mediterranean giants after breaking his leg in a World Cup warm-up match.

And he returned to France convinced the 24-year-old, who will be sidelined for around five months, is keen on a move to the Stade Velodrome.

'`Djibril is still motivated to come to Marseille,' said Diouf on www.olympiquedemarseille.com.

The Marseille president will travel to England early next week in an attempt to complete the transfer.

Cisse, meanwhile, is preparing to start a physiotherapy programme in Saint-Raphael.

The 34-year-old has attracted the attention of the Bank of Scotland Premier League champions as well as three Premiership clubs.

Agent Humphry Nijmen the Glasgow Herald that Hasselbaink would consider a move to Glasgow :

'I spoke to Jimmy about the possibility when I first heard of it and he would be very interested,' he said.

'He said they are a great club and would be charmed to play for them. It is now up to Celtic but we are willing to listen.

'At 34, he still has plenty to offer and still has ambitions at the highest level.

'It would not be a gamble for Celtic because he is already preparing his body for next season. He is a very dedicated and very fit professional.'

Fitz Hall has completed his move from Crystal Palace to Wigan Athletic by putting pen to paper on a four-year contract at the JJB Stadium.

The Latics are believed to have paid £3million for the 25-year-old central defender, but manager Paul Jewell is convinced he will be a success.

"Fitz is a terrific capture for us, and it's a great boost that we've beaten off such stiff competition to land him," Jewell told the club's official website.

"We've been tracking him a long time, but of course Palace were very reluctant to let go of such an important player.

"The Wigan fans will love him, he has everything you could look for in a defender. He's strong, athletic, aggressive and most importantly, has bags of pace.

"The lad won't be fazed by the Premiership, he's played at this level before and I was extremely impressed with how he handled the challenge. I think he's an even better player now that, at 25 years of age, he's in the prime of his career."

The Eagles paid £1.5million to sign Hall from Southampton in August 2004, with the defender having had spells with Barnet, Chesham United and Oldham earlier in his career.

He played 36 Premiership games for Palace as they were relegated in his first season at the club and was again a regular last term as the Eagles reached the Championship play-offs.

Bolton are reported to be closing in on the signing of Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann.

Hamann is looking for a new club after being told he can leave Liverpool after seven seasons at Anfield.

Bolton have held a long-term interest in Hamann and tried to sign him last summer.

Trotters boss Sam Allardyce is a big admirer of Hamann and is keen to lure him to the Reebok Stadium.

Reports emanating from Germany suggest Bolton are closing in on Hamann's signature with the player thought to be happy to stay in England.

Hamann is hoping to win a long-term deal and secure regular first team football.

"I want to have another chance for a two or three-year contract and I also want to play every week," said Hamann.

Blackburn have completed the signing of Gillingham's Welsh international goalkeeper Jason Brown on a free transfer.

The 24-year-old has agreed a four-year deal at Ewood Park to become compatriot Mark Hughes's first signing of the summer.

Brown's future at The Priestfield Stadium had been in doubt ever since he rejected the offer of a new Gills contract and Swansea made their interest known in the player before Rovers stole in to clinch a deal.

Brown told the club's official website: "Just a month ago I was waiting on a contract offer from Gillingham, then last week I looked to be on my way to Swansea before I spoke to [Rovers coach] Eddie Niedzwiecki and he asked me to give them some time.

"It hasn't sunk in yet, I imagine it will do in the next few days. It just goes to show that anything can happen in football, it has been a whirlwind.

"I can't wait to get started working with the coaches and players here."

Brown will compete with Peter Enckelman to be understudy to first choice Brad Friedel next season and the transfer is expected to shelve Rovers' plans to sign Watford's Richard Lee, who spent the last campaign on loan at Ewood Park.

The Magpies are in desperate need of additions to their strikeforce following the retirement of Alan Shearer and the absence until at least the turn of the year of Michael Owen who was injured on England duty.

Hasselbaink is out of contract at north-east neighbours Middlesbrough and reports have claimed the former Holland international will make the short journey to Tyneside.

Roeder, however, insisted there was no foundation in the reports while insisting the Magpies had identified other potential signings.

He told the club's official website: "Contrary to the newspaper report this morning about Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink signing for Newcastle United as a done deal, there is no truth in it whatsoever.

"It disappoints me when stories like this come out with not even one per cent of truth and the people who write them don't take the trouble to ask the people at the club first.

"It is the time of year for speculation and Newcastle United being the club it is, it will often be used as a vehicle.

"But we have our own targets and a list of players that hopefully we will be able to move for shortly."
