Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt will turn down the opportunity to earn twice as much money with Newcastle United than he will at Liverpool, claims a source close to the player's agent Rob Jansen.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry is today trying to conclude a deal for the Dutch international in the hope of landing him before the weekend but with the player on international duty, that may not be possible.

Ideally Rafa would like the £10million hitman at Melwood before the weekend but he may have to wait until the Sheffield United fixture is out of the way unless Feyenoord agree to his early release.

A source close to agent Rob Jansen told us: "Newcastle United have offered Kuyt around £90,000-a-week to join them. That's how much he means to them. Liverpool have offered him less than half of that.

"The fee isn't a problem but Feyenoord want this paying quickly or with a significant advance of cash. Liverpool are tying to keep this amount low whereas Newcastle have offered a bigger incentive to Feyenoord to deal with them instead.

"Money has never been a big issue in Dirk's career which is why he's never been in a rush to leave Feyenoord."

He added: "Of course he'd prefer to move to Liverpool and if they pay him less he's fine with this. He will only move to Newcastle if the Anfield door is closed on him by Feyenoord."

Meanwhile the Liverpool Daily Post are today reporting that Rafa is 'back at his desk at Melwood today hoping to conclude the £10m switch of Dirk Kuyt'.

fr:soccernet.com--Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder has admitted he faces competition if he is to bring Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt to St James' Park.

Roeder will be in Dublin on Wednesday to watch the Feyenoord hitman in action for his country once again but knows a player who has been linked with Liverpool among other clubs throughout the summer has options.

Speaking on BBC Radio Newcastle, Roeder said: 'He is not the quickest striker I have ever seen in my life, but there is no doubt he knows how to score a goal.

'He is a very, very hard working player, and his body language on the pitch suggests he is the sort of player you would like in your dressing room. He is very committed to the team effort.

'There are lots of plusses as far as Dirk Kuyt is concerned, but I do know we are not the only club who are interested in him.

'Another club, in the top four, are very strongly interested in him.

'We would like to find the possibility of bringing this particular player to Newcastle, and we are working hard on that at the moment.'

The recruitment of a striker to replace retired skipper Alan Shearer is Roeder's main priority as the start of the new Premiership season approaches with £17million man Michael Owen out injured.

Dirk Kuyt helped Holland rout the Republic of Ireland 4-0 on Wednesday night - then revealed he believes a move to a Premiership club is close.
Liverpool are understood to be the Feyenoord hitman's preferred destination, although several other clubs have been linked with the striker.
Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder was in Dublin to see the striker on the winning side as the Dutch won 4-0 at Lansdowne Road.
And Kuyt said after the game: "There are a few clubs interested - but only one is my dream club.
"I don't want to say anything about that - but I think we can say more in a few days."

  Liverpool are hoping to complete the signing of Dirk Kuyt from Feyenoord this morning.  
The Dutch striker underwent a medical yesterday and will officially sign his new Anfield contract as soon as the test results have been approved.
  
"We hope the results will prove to be satisfactory. All being well it will go through this morning," confirmed Chief Executive Rick Parry.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has moved to increase his defensive options by agreeing a fee with Hamburg for defender Khalid Boulahrouz.

The Blues chief has had a frustrating summer on the defensive front, as William Gallas is hankering after a move away from Stamford Bridge and Arsenal have refused to budge in their valuation of Ashley Cole.

The Portuguese seems set to ease his woes a little by swooping for Dutch international Boulahrouz.

The defender proved a key figure for Hamburg last term, having joined the German club in the summer of 2004 from RKC Waalwijk, and he increased his stock at the World Cup finals.

It could well have been his no-nonsense displays this summer which persuaded Mourinho to make his move, as the two clubs have concurred on a fee.

Boulahrouz will miss Hamburg's trip to Energie Cottbus on Saturday, as he has been given permission to head to London to discuss personal terms and have a medical.

The 24-year-old is comfortable in a variety of positions and will certainly add to Mourinho's options, provided he concurs on a deal and negotiates his way through a medical.

Chelsea assistant manager Steve Clarke feels Boulahrouz will be a useful addition to the Stamford Bridge ranks and also confirmed they are still looking to recruit ahead of the transfer deadline.

"He is a good competitive player and will be a good addition to our squad," Clarke told Chelsea T.

"He can play centre back or either full back. I think he is right-footed and it is important to have one or two players around the squad who can play in a number of different positions.

"Until the end of August we will be looking for good players.

"If Boulahrouz is the only one we can add to the squad we will be happy with that.

"If we can get someone else, we will get someone else."
