Magpies offload Boumsong to Juve  

French central defender Jean Alain Boumsong has joined Juventus from Newcastle for £3.3m.
The 26-year-old, who was part of the France 2006 World Cup squad, has agreed to a four-year deal with the club.

Boumsong, who had also been linked with Marseille and Lens, moved from Rangers to Newcastle in January 2005, signing a five-and-a-half-year deal.

Meanwhile, Juventus have also agreed to play a friendly with United at St James' Park next summer.

Boumsong had arrived at Rangers from Auxerre on a free transfer in the summer of 2004 but made only 28 appearances for them before former Magpies boss Graeme Souness took him to Tyneside.

But he proved unpopular among a large proportion of Magpies supporters after turning out a number of poor performances.

This season he found himself behind Craig Moore, Steven Taylor and Titus Bramble in the centre-back pecking order.

Anelka completes record £8million move to Bolton

Nicolas Anelka has signed a four-year deal with Bolton after the Premiership club agreed to pay a club record £8million to Fenerbahce for the French striker.

  
The 27-year-old, who has had previous stints in England with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, successfully completed a medical with Wanderers to become their record signing, the fee dwarfing the previous top mark of £3.5million paid to Wimbledon for Dean Holdsworth in 1997.


He will now travel to London to meet his new team-mates ahead of their game with Charlton at The Valley.

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce told the club's official website: 'Patience is a virtue and I am pleased to say that all the waiting and hard work we've done behind the scenes has paid off.'

'Nicolas is a player with an amazing track record in the Premiership: he was born to score goals.

'His talent and experience will be a valuable asset for us.'

The France international returns to England after an 18-month stint in Turkey who he joined from Manchester City.

Reading have signed former Aston Villa right back Ulises de la Cruz to a one-year contract.

The Ecuador international joins the Premiership new boys after impressing manager Steve Coppell during a trial spell at The Madejski Stadium.

The former Hibernian defender arrives on a free transfer after his Villa contract expired at the end of last season, but he will not be in the reckoning for Saturday's trip to Wigan Athletic.

Royals boss Coppell was surprised that de la Cruz was still available for transfer before the South American became the club's third signing of the summer.

"I was quite surprised when Ulises was still available, and he is a player who has played at this level and can compete at this level," Coppell told the club's official website.

"We have a long gap between now and the Man City game, so that's an opportunity for him to settle down and get his bearings."

Portsmouth look set to miss out on another transfer target after being quoted an £11 million price tag for Sulley Ali Muntari.

The Ghana international saw his stock rise after an impressive World Cup and it was such displays which prompted serious interest from money-rich Portsmouth.

However, Redknapp has endured a summer of frustration having missed out on targets that include Jermain Defoe, Nicolas Anelka, Gareth Barry and Curtis Davies - amongst others - with Muntari now looking likely to join a growing list.

Redknapp admits Portsmouth would not be willing to strike a deal at the £11 million mooted by Udinese, but he did concede the club are working on bringing the 23-year-old to the South Coast.

"If they are asking £11 million for him they will be waiting a long time," admitted Redknapp.

"Peter Storrie (Pompey chief executive) is working on the deal and I don't think that is the kind of figure he'll be working to.

"There is no doubt Muntari is a good young player and I like him a lot. We need strength like he has."

While Muntari's signature looks a far off prospect at present, one potential new recruit is Ognjen Koroman, who spent five months on loan at Fratton Park last season and could now be on his way back to the club on a one-year loan deal.

Koroman was not offered a permanent stay upon the completion on his loan deal but he has now claimed that Redknapp is eager to secure his return for a further term.

"I'm delighted to be rejoining Portsmouth," said Koroman. "It is flattering that Harry Redknapp has kept me in his plans."

Skysports.com understand Portsmouth are lining up a move for Fenerbahce star Stephen Appiah.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp has been trailing the powerful midfielder all summer after Appiah impressed at the World Cup with Ghana.

Redknapp is in the market for a new midfielder and he is thought to be a big fan of Appiah.

A number of clubs have been keeping tabs on Appiah following his impressive performances in Germany over the summer.

Fenerbahce have resisted all overtures for their star midfielder, but they could now face a fight to keep him after crashing out of the UEFA Champions League to Dinamo Kiev.

Appiah scored a fantastic goal in Fenerbahce's draw with Kiev on Wednesday and now a number of clubs are planning to lure him away from Turkey.

Portsmouth are hoping to steal a march on their rivals by taking him to Fratton Park.

Redknapp watched the player in international action last week and is now ready to make a bid for his services after being priced out a move for Celtic's Stilian Petrov.

Pompey could face a fight for Appiah with several Spanish sides including Atletico Madrid thought to be interested in the former Juventus man.

Martin Jol has confirmed Tottenham have lodged a new bid for Stewart Downing.

Spurs are desperate to land the Middlesbrough winger and have made numerous bids in the last 12 months.

Now Spurs have made a renewed offer for the England international and Jol says that he is now awaiting a response from Boro.

"Stewart Downing that is somebody we would like to have in our squad and he would be a very good player for us and would give us something extra on the left," he told Sky Sports.

"We have put a very good offer in, our highest offer and hopefully they will accept and if not it would be a pity.

"We need a settled team and then you can work on the strength of the squad, if you put in a bid for a left wing player everyone realises where we are trying to get someone."

The ball now seems firmly in Boro's court - although the Teesside club have always insisted that Downing - who is on a long-term contract at The Riverside - is not for sale.

Reading have completed the loan signing of Cameroon defender Andre Bikey from Lokomotiv Moscow.

The 21-year-old will spend the rest of the season at the Madejski Stadium with the Royals having the option of wrapping up a permanent deal next summer.

The move comes despite Bikey's sending-off when on trial for the club on their pre-season trip to Sweden.

Manager Steve Coppell told the club's official website: 'He did well in Sweden until he blotted his copybook by getting sent off in the last game, but we feel that happened because he was so determined to impress.

'He's a Cameroon international with good experience so we hope he takes the opportunity and plays a full role in our season.'

Bikey will link up with his Cameroon team-mates for a friendly against Rwanda next week.

Villa and Pompey have both been interested in signing the Bulgaria international who is rated in the £7million bracket by The Bhoys.

But Redknapp told BBC Radio Five Live: 'I think you will find Petrov has gone to Aston Villa. That is the plan and we wish him all the best.'

Petrov has been O'Neill's number one target since he came to Villa although he has been reluctant to make any comment about any potential transfer dealings.

The possibility of him arriving at Villa would appear to have increased if reports indicating Celtic are about to sign Thomas Gravesen from Real Madrid for £2million prove accurate.

The 23-year-old striker was at White Hart Lane last season on loan and scored 11 goals before returning to the Italian club.

Spurs boss Martin Jol had been attempting to bring the Egypt international back after his departure, and has now has Mido back to bolster an attacking line-up at White Hart Lane including Dimitar Berbatov, Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane.

Jol said: 'We've been tracking Mido since his loan ended and we were always keen to bring him back.

'Roma took some persuading and I'm delighted to have him in the squad.

'He knows I like him as a player, his strength in the air and his mentality. It's an excellent addition to the squad and our striking options are now complete.'

The striker told official website: 'I'm very happy to be back.

'It was, and it always will be a great honour for me to play for Tottenham.

'I always knew in my heart I would be coming back. It is a fantastic move for me, I have some good friends here and it will be good to be back with the lads. I saw them training today and I'm looking forward to working with Martin and Chris (Hughton) again.

Skysports.com understand Middlesbrough have won the race to sign Jonathan Woodgate.

It is believed that the Real Madrid defender is currently undergoing a medical at Middlesbrough after opting to make the move to Teesside.

Real are willing to loan out the former Leeds and Newcastle defender so that he can get valuable first team action under his belt.

Woodgate held talks with Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate on Monday about a possible move to The Riverside.

Newcastle, Valencia, Villarreal and Portsmouth all expressed an interest in his services, but Woodgate is believed to have decided to make the move to Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough have agreed a season-long loan deal with Real for Woodgate with the possible option of a permanent move.

Should Woodgate successfully come through his medical the move should be tied up in the next few days before the close of the transfer window.

Woodgate's arrival at Middlesbrough would come as a massive boost to Southgate as he has been chasing a new defender all summer and the England international would ably fill the void left by Southgate's move into the manager's seat at The Riverside.

Manager Martin Jol made his three-way swoop ahead of tomorrow’s transfer deadline.

First, he sealed Mido’s £4m return to White Hart Lane after the Egyptian international striker spent last season on loan from Roma.

Then he agreed a £5m deal with Wigan for full-back Chimbonda, with £3.75m up front and the rest based on appearances.

And the Spurs boss completed a hectic day of transfer activity when he hijacked Malbranque’s £2.5million move from Fulham to West Ham.

Hammers boss Alan Pardew was confident of signing French midfielder Malbranque this week.

But the player made it clear he preferred a move to White Hart Lane and expects to sign a £30,000-a-week contract today.

Malbranque, 26, will become the final piece in Jol’s jigsaw after a dismal start to the new season.

He has been out in the cold at Fulham since refusing to sign a new Craven Cottage contract.
