Hamilton cruises to Australian GP win

By Matt Beer Sunday, March 16th 2008, 06:10 GMT

Lewis Hamilton took a commanding victory in the Australian Grand Prix on a disastrous day for title rivals Ferrari.

BMW's Nick Heidfeld and Williams' Nico Rosberg completed the podium, while both Ferraris retired with mechanical problems after a series of errors by drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa.

McLaren had been set for a perfect one-two finish, but Hamilton's new teammate Heikki Kovalainen was unfortunate to fall to the back of the field after the safety car came out just before he was set to make his final pitstop.

He recovered to fifth, after a spectacular late battle with Renault returnee Fernando Alonso, the man he had swapped seats with over the winter.

The race was chaotic from the start. As Hamilton led BMW's Robert Kubica and Kovalainen through the first corner, Massa spun to the inside of the first corner while attempting to out-accelerate the second McLaren. The Ferrari broke its front wing on the barriers and had to pit for repairs.

Behind this incident, a number of separate collisions unfolded - resulting in Sebastian Vettel (Toro Rosso), Giancarlo Fisichella (Force India), Mark Webber (Red Bull), Anthony Davidson (Super Aguri) and Jenson Button (Honda) all retiring before the end of the first lap, while Williams' Kazuki Nakajima had to pit for a new front wing.

Raikkonen made excellent progress through the carnage and moved from 15th on the grid to eighth, but he would remain trapped behind seventh-placed Rubens Barrichello's Honda for the first 18 laps of the race.

The opening lap tangles prompted a brief safety car period, after which Hamilton calmly pulled away in the lead - lapping up to a second per lap quicker than Kubica, who kept Kovalainen behind him. In their wake, Rosberg, Heidfeld and Jarno Trulli formed the initial top six, but the Toyota driver retired at his first pitstop due to a battery problem.

Kubica was carrying the lightest fuel load of the front-runners and came in on lap 16. He rejoined in traffic, allowing Kovalainen to easily move up to second once the initial pitstop sequence was complete, while one-stopping Raikkonen moved up to third, right behind Kovalainen as others came in.

His teammate Massa was making less successful progress through the field, and on lap 25 he caused the second safety car period after a move on David Coulthard into the first corner sent the Red Bull flying into the air. It landed heavily, spreading debris across Turns 1 and 2. Massa retired when his engine cut out shortly afterwards.

At the restart Raikkonen immediately pounced on Kovalainen, trying an abortive outside line move at Turn 1, before diving down the inside at Turn 3. But the Ferrari was carrying far too much speed and plunged through the gravel, falling to the tail of the field. He would later lose more time with a spin at the same spot.

Hamilton then proceeded to edge away from Kovalainen again, as Heidfeld and Rosberg - who had swapped places at the first pitstops - stayed within sight of the second McLaren.

Kovalainen was running longer than the rest of this group, but this proved to be his undoing, as the safety car emerged again just before his final stop. Toyota's new signing Timo Glock had run wide at Turn 12 and launched his car destructively over an access road, hurling debris over the track.

The need to wait for the pits to open under yellow meant Kovalainen fell to the tail of the pack, while Hamilton was able to return to the front of the queue and calmly pull away from Heidfeld and Rosberg in the final 11 laps after the restart, with the Williams driver delighted to claim his first Formula One podium.

Toro Rosso's rookie Sebastien Bourdais had been set for fourth - having perfectly timed his single pitstop just as the pits opened under the second safety car - until his car failed three laps from the end.

That elevated the battling Alonso and Kovalainen into fourth and fifth. The McLaren passed the Renault at Turn 13 with two laps remaining, only for Alonso to cruise back ahead when Kovalainen faltered on the straight.

Raikkonen would have finished with this pair had his car not fallen sick and retired in the closing stages.

Rubens Barrichello claimed sixth for Honda, but was set for a top five finish until stopping in a closed pit during the final safety car. He was also let out too soon during the stop, taking his fuel rig with him and scattering his mechanics, who all escaped injury.

The Brazilian, however, is under investigation for leaving the pitlane when the red light was one and he could be disqualified.

Williams' Kazuki Nakajima was the final finisher in this incredibly attritional race, taking seventh place despite running into Kubica as he prepared for the final restart - damaging his front wing and ending the front row starter's race.

After fighting back, Kovalainen repassed the Renault with two laps to go, only to have his car falter momentarily as they crossed the line for the 57th time. As he wiped oil off his visor he accidentally triggered the pit-lane speed limiter and a relieved Alonso pounced to head his former team mate home in fourth place.

Nakajima penalised for Kubica incident

By Simon Strang Sunday, March 16th 2008, 08:30 GMT

Williams rookie Kazuki Nakajima will take a 10-place grid penalty in Malaysia for colliding with Robert Kubica's BMW in the final safety car period during the Australian Grand Prix.

The Japanese driver scored his first world championship points for finishing sixth, but only after having his nosecone replaced following the incident on lap 47. Kubica was less fortunate and was forced to retire from the race.

Nakajima, who twice had to pit for new bodywork in a chaotic race, was nevertheless pleased to have made it through the carnage to continue his 100% finishing record in Formula One.

"To get to the end today was great, great to finish and great to get some points," he said. "It was really tough out there today physically, but on top of that there was so much going on. At the start, a car spun in front of me, turned side on and damaged my nose.

"Then with the various safety car periods, the team did a great job to swap my strategy to a one-stop that put me in the points. Towards the end of the race, I had another incident when all the cars backed up into each other and I damaged my nose again. But it was good to be able to demonstrate my physical fitness and my consistency and I'm looking forward to Sepang which is a circuit I know better."

Nakajima's three points in addition to those scored by Nico Rosberg, who finished on the podium for the first time in his F1 career, means that Williams are second in the constructors' point standings.

Williams technical director Sam Michael commented: "It's a fantastic start to the season, we knew we had the potential in the car but didn’t realise it because of the reliability problems we had in practice, but that all came out in the race.

"Nico kept his head down through lots of difficult situations, he had good strong car pace throughout the race and congratulations to him for his first podium," he added. "Kazuki did well too despite being involved in two incidents. Both cars had solid reliability throughout the race and it’s great to go away with a haul of points from the first grand prix."

Barrichello disqualified from Australian GP

By Pablo Elizalde Sunday, March 16th 2008, 07:48 GMT

Rubens Barrichello has been disqualified from the Australian Grand Prix after jumping the red light at the end of the pitlane near the end of the race.

The Honda Racing driver finished the race in sixth position but was under investigation after television images showed the Brazilian had left the pitlane when the red light was still on during a safety car period.

Barrichello had already been hit with a 10-second stop-and-go for refuelling when it was not allowed.

Honda team boss Nick Fry confirmed after the race that Barrichello has been disqualified.

That moved Williams's Kazuki Nakajima up to sixth position, with Toro Rosso's Sebastien Bourdais in seventh and world champion Kimi Raikkonen scoring the final point despite not finishing the race.

Coulthard expects Massa to take blame

By Pablo Elizalde Sunday, March 16th 2008, 07:40 GMT

David Coulthard is expecting Felipe Massa to take full responsibility for the crash that took the Scot out of the Australian Grand Prix.

The duo made contact on lap 26, when the Ferrari driver dived down the inside of the Red Bull at the first corner.

Coulthard's car was launched into the air and ended up heavily damaged after the landing, leaving Coulthard with no choice but to retire.

The Scot was furious after the race and expected Massa to take the blame for the accident.

"I can understand that Felipe (Massa) was in a quicker car and was trying to overtake, but you've got to have your car alongside to pass, especially in a corner like Turn one, you can't just ram into them," said Coulthard.

"Felipe took a lunge from too far back and Turn one is a corner where you have to turn in early - it's not like Turn three, which is a hairpin and door's open for a long time.

"I screwed up last year when I tried a speculative move on Alex (Wurz), but I took full responsibility for it and I would expect Felipe to do the same today."

Teammate Mark Webber also retired from the race after making contact with Anthony Davidson on the opening lap.

"It's a real shame, I'm very disappointed," he said. "I had a reasonable start into Turn one, I was behind Kimi (Raikkonen) going around the outside, then I think someone hit Jenson (Button) on the inside and I had to go on to the grass.

"I had a good run down to turn three, but then (Kazuki) Nakajima came along side with no front wing. I thought 'this will be interesting', - he had a bit of a moment and he and (Anthony) Davidson were very tight next to me.

"I was trying to give them as much room as I could and, although I didn't really feel any contact at all, I think the left rear of my car got a clip from Davidson."

Massa says not to blame for crash

By Pablo Elizalde Sunday, March 16th 2008, 09:12 GMT

Felipe Massa has told David Coulthard not to expect an apology from him as he believes he was not to blame for their crash in Australia.

Coulthard was critical of the Ferrari driver after making contact on lap 26, when Massa dived down the inside of the Scot.

The incident forced Coulthard out of the race and the Red Bull driver said Massa should apologise for it.

The Brazilian, however, said he had done nothing wrong.

"If he wants me to apologise then he should just go and watch the television instead. I was on the inside, I did nothing wrong," Massa told reporters.

Massa, who retired later on, admitted Ferrari had started the championship in the worst possible way.

"A horrible start to the season. We had engine problems which is unusual for a team like ours. We have to understand what happened and react immediately.

"I was fighting my way up the order all race long. At the first corner I lost control of the car while battling with Kovalainen and ended up off the track. Then I moved up the order and could have finished in the points.

"Our championship will have to start again in Malaysia. We know we have a good car we have to work to be able to use it as intended."

Australia Sunday quotes: Williams

Sunday, March 16th 2008, 08:44 GMT

Nico Rosberg, 3rd: I am really, really happy and I have to say that being on the podium in Formula One is a really great feeling. It's been a while since I have been here and its great for the whole team as they have been working hard over the winter, they have done a good job and made some real progress. I gave everything I had today, but it was a tough race on a street circuit in the heat which didn't make it easy.

The team deserves my thanks for this great result and it really encourages me to feel that I can grow with Williams. I also want to thank my father for everything he has done to help me to get to this position. We have a solid race car and some good developments coming, but we don’t want to get too excited because it’s early days yet.

Kazuki Nakajima, 6th: To get to the end today was great, great to finish and great to get some points. It was really tough out there today physically, but on top of that there was so much going on. At the start, a car spun in front of me, turned side on and damaged my nose. Then with the various safety car periods, the team did a great job to swap my strategy to a one stop that put me in the points.

Towards the end of the race, I had another incident when all the cars backed up into each other and I damaged my nose again. But it was good to be able to demonstrate my physical fitness and my consistency and I’m looking forward to Sepang which is a circuit I know better.

Kazuki did well too despite being involved in two incidents.

Both cars had solid reliability throughout the race and it’s great to go away with a haul of points from the first Grand Prix. After tonight we will look forward to Malaysia for better qualifying and build on our second place in the championship.
