Mosley responds to BMW, Mercedes
By Jonathan Noble Thursday, April 3rd 2008, 09:45 GMT

FIA president Max Mosley claims BMW and Mercedes-Benz should have contacted him before issuing their joint statement criticising his behaviour.

The German car manufacturers labelled the allegations about Mosley's private life in the News of the World as 'disgraceful', as F1's competitors ended their silence over the controversy of Thursday.

But Mosley said he was not surprised by BMW and Mercedes-Benz's statement, but suggested that they were criticising him for something which may not be true.

Speaking to Reuters, Mosley said: "Given the history of BMW and Mercedes Benz, particularly before and during the Second World War, I fully understand why they would wish to strongly distance themselves from what they rightly describe as the disgraceful content of these publications.

"Unfortunately, they did not contact me before putting out their statement to ask whether the content was in fact true.

"No doubt the FIA will respond to them in due course as I am about to respond to the newspaper in question."

Mosley has indicated that he is preparing legal action against the News of the World for invasion of privacy over the report in last Sunday's newspaper.

Toyota also critical of Mosley's actions

By Jonathan Noble Thursday, April 3rd 2008, 09:15 GMT

Toyota has urged the FIA to consider whether or not president Max Mosley has met with the 'moral obligations' of his role in the wake of the revelations about his private life.

In a statement issued by the Japanese car manufacturer on Thursday, the company said that it did not approve of Mosley's behaviour and suggested that he had acted in a manner that was not fitting of a man in his position.

"Toyota Motorsport does not approve of any behaviour which could be seen to damage Formula One's image, in particular any behaviour which could be understood to be racist or anti-Semitic," said the statement.

"Senior figures within any sport or business, including motorsport, must adhere to high standards of behaviour. When all the facts are known, it will be for the FIA to decide whether Mr Mosley has met the moral obligations which come with the position of FIA President."

Toyota's statement comes shortly after BMW and Mercedes-Benz issued their own comments, claiming that they viewed Mosley's behaviour as 'disgraceful'.

Honda asks FIA to consider Mosley's role

By Jonathan Noble Thursday, April 3rd 2008, 09:30 GMT

Honda Racing have joined the chorus of criticisms of FIA president Max Mosley over his behaviour, and called for motor racing's governing body to make a swift decision on whether he should carry on in his role.

With BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota all having issued statements on Thursday claiming that Mosley's behaviour was unacceptable, Honda added that they worried that F1's reputations had been damaged by the allegations made against Mosley in the News of the World.

"It is necessary that senior figures in sport and business maintain the highest standards of conduct in order to fulfil their duties with integrity and respect," said the Honda statement.

"The Honda Racing F1 Team extremely disappointed by recent events surrounding Mr Mosley and we are concerned that the reputation of Formula One and all its participants is being damaged.

"We request that the FIA gives this matter careful consideration and reaches an immediate decision in the best interests of F1 and Motorsport."

Theissen stands by Mosley criticism

By Jonathan Noble Thursday, April 3rd 2008, 15:44 GMT

BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen says the German car manufacturer stands by its criticisms of Max Mosley's behaviour, despite the forthright response from the FIA president about their stance.

Mercedes-Benz and BMW issued a joint statement this morning saying that the behaviour of Mosley, as revealed in the News of the World, was 'disgraceful.'

That statement prompted Mosley to criticise the car makers, claiming they should have checked with him first about the truthfulness of the reports before they spoke out.

He said: "Given the history of BMW and Mercedes Benz, particularly before and during the Second World War, I fully understand why they would wish to strongly distance themselves from what they rightly describe as the disgraceful content of these publications.

"Unfortunately, they did not contact me before putting out their statement to ask whether the content was in fact true. No doubt the FIA will respond to them in due course as I am about to respond to the newspaper in question."

Despite that response, and Mosley's reference to the Second World War, Theissen has insisted that BMW stands by its statement - and claimed that the controversy spreads well beyond just Formula One.

"We had no intention nor have we announced that we will back down from anything," said Theissen when asked about rumours that BMW was poised to retract the statement in light of Mosley's response.

"We have put out a statement this morning. We have asked for a reaction of the relevant FIA bodies and we have the answer from Max Mosley that we will get a reaction from the FIA. We will not make any further comments until we have this reaction."

He added: "I am a bit surprised that this whole thing is mainly seen as a Formula One issue. In my view, it is not. The FIA is the governing body, or the umbrella body, of the worldwide motoring clubs so it is not even the auto industry that is affected, it is the clubs. That is why we expect a reaction from the FIA first."

When asked why neither BMW nor Mercedes-Benz communicated with Mosley before issuing their statement, Theissen said: "For two reasons. First we haven't had an explanation from Max or the FIA.

"He has sent a letter to the FIA but not to the auto manufacturers, and that also shows that the FIA is affected in the first instance, and not us. We haven't had an explanation.

"And secondly we have not commented on the substance and the question of whether it is true or not. We have commented on the public perception of the situation. And that doesn't need any discussion or explanation. The purpose of our statement is to make clear where our company stands."

Theissen believes, however, that it would take some time to judge whether or not the affair has damaged F1's reputation.

"I think it is too early to say," he said. "We have to see what happens in the coming weeks."

Theissen said he was not surprised that Mosley has bucked all calls to resign and fully intends to remain in his role as FIA president.

"Having been in F1 for nine years now, I am not surprised about anything any more," said Theissen. "But let me add one other thing.

"This entire issue is in focus now, but what shouldn't be neglected is it certainly looks like a trap. And that is something which in our view is not acceptable either."

Mosley calls extraordinary FIA meeting

By Jonathan Noble Thursday, April 3rd 2008, 14:47 GMT

FIA president Max Mosley has called an Extraordinary General Assembly meeting of motor racing's governing body to discuss the fallout of the tabloid revelations into his private life.

On the back of a raft of calls for the FIA to take action over the matter, Mosley has asked the president of the FIA Senate to arrange the meeting for the earliest possible date.

In a statement issued by the FIA on Thursday, it said: "The full membership of the FIA will be invited to attend the meeting at which the widespread publicity following an apparently illegal invasion of the FIA President's privacy will be discussed.

"The FIA has noted that Mr Mosley is preparing legal proceedings against the newspaper in question.

"It is anticipated that the meeting will take place in Paris. It will be held on the earliest practicable date. No further comments will be made by the FIA regarding the matter at this stage."

The move by Mosley comes after Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Honda Racing and Toyota all issued statements expressing their unease at the stories of Mosley's private life that appeared in the News of the World last week.

Autosport.com understands Mosley has called the meeting because he wants to provide the FIA will total clarity of his position.

The Senate is formed of over 200 members so it is likely it will take some time before the meeting is arranged.

It is understood that Mosley is to issue another statement tomorrow.

Despite several calls for Mosley to resign, he indicated in a letter he wrote to FIA members earlier this week that he was fully committed to carrying on in his role.

Maiden F1 pole for Kubica, BMW in Bahrain

By Matt Beer Saturday, April 5th 2008, 12:13 GMT

Robert Kubica took his and BMW Sauber's first Formula One pole position with a stunning lap in qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Pole beat favourite Felipe Massa (Ferrari), who had dominated Friday practice, by 0.027 seconds.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen will share the second row.

Massa held provisional pole after the first flying laps of Q3, but only by 0.011 seconds over Kubica.

Hamilton then briefly beat both when he lapped in 1:33.292 on his second run, but the McLaren driver did not stay on top for long, as Kubica responded with a 1:33.096.

Although Massa's second lap was sufficient to reclaim the front row position from Hamilton, his time of 1:33.123 was not enough to beat the BMW driver to pole.

World champion Raikkonen could only manage fourth, three tenths of a second slower than teammate Massa. Heikki Kovalainen completed the top five in the second McLaren.

Kubica's teammate Nick Heidfeld was 0.7 seconds slower than the pole-sitter in sixth place for BMW.

Jarno Trulli (Toyota) and Nico Rosberg (Williams) will share the fourth row, Trulli having been second fastest in the first qualifying segment.

Jenson Button got Honda into the top ten for the first time this season, edging up to 10th in the final moments of Q2 and then securing ninth place, just ahead of Renault's Fernando Alonso. Button's teammate Rubens Barrichello will start 12th.

Red Bull Racing had a disappointing session. While Mark Webber missed out on a top ten spot by 0.009 seconds and will start 11th, while teammate David Coulthard blamed a straightforward lack of speed for his Q1 elimination after ending up 17th on the grid. He was 0.018 seconds away from making it through to Q2.

Timo Glock (Toyota), Nelson Piquet (Renault) and Kazuki Nakajima (Williams) could not match their respective teammates Trulli, Alonso and Rosberg, and were knocked out in Q2.

While Glock briefly made it up to ninth before other drivers' improvements pushed him back to 13th, Piquet and Nakajima's best efforts were only good enough for 14th and 16th.

Sebastien Bourdais out-qualified Toro Rosso teammate Sebastian Vettel for the first time and also made his first Q2 appearance. The Frenchman will start 15th, with Vettel only managing 19th.

Force India again failed to make it beyond Q1. Giancarlo Fisichella moved up to 18th with a last-gasp effort after abandoning his last flying lap following an error, while teammate Adrian Sutil was 20th.

The Super Aguris will fill the back row, with Anthony Davidson ahead of Takuma Sato for the first time this season.

The Japanese driver caused a brief red flag after spinning on the exit of the final corner, damaging his car's rear wing and suspension on the pit entry barrier.

Mosley insists he has done nothing wrong

By Jonathan Noble Saturday, April 5th 2008, 07:48 GMT

Defiant FIA president Max Mosley insists he has done 'nothing wrong' in the scandal over his private life, and labelled his behaviour as 'harmless and completely legal'.

The head of motor racing's governing body has so far resisted all calls for him to resign in the wake of the sexual allegations made by the News of the World, and last night revealed that he would be suing the newspaper over the story.

In a letter to the German motoring federation ADAC, which has asked Mosley to seriously consider his position, Mosley says that he cannot see any reason why he should quit - and claims he has support from 20 FIA clubs and representatives of some additional 50 clubs to stay on in his role.

The letter, a copy of which has been seen by autosport.com, is addressed to ADAC president Peter Meyer and has also been sent to all FIA member clubs, members of the World Motor Sport Council, members of the FIA Senate and members of the World Council for Automobile Mobility and Tourism.

"Had I been caught driving excessively fast on a public road or over the alcohol limit (even in, say, Sweden where it is very low) I should have resigned the same day," wrote Mosley.

"As it is, a scandal paper obtained by illegal means pictures of something I did in private which, although unacceptable to some people, was harmless and completely legal. Many people do things in their bedrooms or have personal habits which others find repugnant. But as long as they keep them private, nobody objects.

"The offence seems to be not what I did but the fact that it became public. But I played no role in this, indeed I did my utmost to ensure it remained private. I was the victim of a disgusting conspiracy.

"It goes without saying that the so-called Nazi element is pure fabrication. This will become crystal clear when the matter comes to trial. The newspaper invented this in order to spice up their story and introduce my family background."

He added: "In short, I think I have done nothing wrong and that the wrong was done by the newspaper. That is why I am suing them.

"I don't think any of this should affect my work on motoring safety, the environment or the sport. I believe that 21st century adults do not worry about private sexual matters as long as they are legal and harmless. I shall put this view to the Assembly in due course."

As well as ADAC's criticism, other motoring organizations that have expressed concern about Mosley's behaviour include the Dutch federation KNAF, the American federation AAA and Israel's Automobile and Touring Club.

Furthermore in the letter, Mosley reveals that he has also received a letter from the Australian touring club in a similar tone to that expressed by ADAC.

Massa leads Ferrari 1-2 in Bahrain

By Matt Beer Sunday, April 6th 2008, 13:07 GMT

Felipe Massa rebounded from his shaky start to the 2008 season by beating teammate Kimi Raikkonen to victory in a Ferrari-dominated Bahrain Grand Prix.

Pole-winner Robert Kubica took another podium for BMW in third, ahead of teammate Nick Heidfeld - a result that puts the team into the lead of the constructors' championship for the first time in their short history.

But it was a disastrous day for pre-race championship leaders Lewis Hamilton and McLaren. The Briton lost seven places off the line with a very poor start, then hit former teammate Fernando Alonso and broke his front wing. He could only finish 13th, while teammate Heikki Kovalainen was a quiet fifth.

Massa instantly shot past front row partner Kubica and into the race lead at the start, with Kovalainen dodging around Hamilton to move up to third. The Finn out-muscled countryman Raikkonen through Turns 1 and 2, but was repassed by the world champion further ahead the opening lap.

Raikkonen then rapidly caught and passed Kubica for second, driving around the outside of the Pole at Turn 1 on lap three, while Kovalainen lost another place to Heidfeld when he ran wide on the same lap.

Hamilton's bad start had dropped him to 10th, and he was attempting to pass Alonso for ninth when he clipped the back of the Renault as they accelerated out of Turn 2. The McLaren briefly became airborne and lost its front wing, leaving Hamilton down in 18th and a minute behind the leaders after he pitted for repairs.

This tangle was one of several early incidents, with Jenson Button (Honda), Adrian Sutil (Force India) and David Coulthard (Red Bull) all having to pit with damage after a chaotic opening lap. Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel sustained broken suspension, while Renault driver Nelson Piquet spun down the order on the second lap. He recovered several positions before retiring with gearbox failure.

At the front, Massa edged away from Raikkonen and established a five-second early lead. Kubica kept Raikkonen under pressure until pitting on lap 17, three laps earlier than Raikkonen, who was the first Ferrari driver to stop.

With Kubica then losing time behind Toyota's Timo Glock, who was running a very long first stint, the Ferraris took control of the middle part of the race. Raikkonen narrowed Massa's advantage to three seconds with a series of fastest laps, but the Brazilian always had enough speed in hand and managed to rebuild his lead again.

By the time the final stops were completed, Massa's lead was back up to seven seconds, while Raikkonen had to focus on the resurgent Kubica, who stopped later than the Ferraris and got back within three seconds of second place. The Finn stayed ahead though, and now leads the championship.

Heidfeld also led several laps with an extremely late final stop, helping him to secure fourth, comfortably ahead of Kovalainen. The McLaren set the fastest lap of the race in the closing stages, but still finished nearly 30 seconds behind the victorious Massa.

Jarno Trulli had a very strong race to sixth for Toyota, pressuring Kovalainen in the middle stages. The Italian was able to pull away from the chasing Mark Webber (Red Bull), who passed Nico Rosberg's Williams for seventh at the first stops.

Glock's strategy allowed him to run as high as third, and he ultimately beat Alonso to ninth as the damaged Renault struggled to hold off Rubens Barrichello in the final laps.

Hamilton had to settle for 13th behind Giancarlo Fisichella's Force India, taking the place with a late move on Williams' Kazuki Nakajima.

Behind Toro Rosso's Sebastien Bourdais and the two Super Aguris, Coulthard finished 18th after a collision with Button. The Honda driver attempted to pass Coulthard as both chased the midfield pack, but rode up over the side of the Red Bull and had to retire. Coulthard managed to rejoin and coax his battered car to the flag.
