Meghni set for Saints move

Mourad Meghni is set to join St Etienne after rejecting the chance to move to England.

The highly-rated Frenchman is looking to leave Bologna following their relegation from Serie A.

Bologna suffered relegation to Serie B after losing a play-off against Parma and Meghni has informed the club he wants to move on.

A number of clubs have expressed an interest in the talented midfielder with Juventus and Palermo thought to be keen to keep him in Italy.

Several English clubs also registered an interest in Meghni and Monaco-based agent Willie McKay tried to broker a deal to bring the player to England.

However, it appears Meghni wants to move to France to bolster his international hopes.

Meghni believes a move to France could boost his chances of breaking into Raymond Domenech's plans for the World Cup next summer.

McKay revealed that he spoke to several Premiership clubs about Meghni, but that it looks like he will move to St Etienne as he wants to be playing regularly with the World Cup on the horizon.

"I spoke to several Premiership clubs about Meghni," McKay told skysports.com.

"But the problem was that a lot of English clubs don't know much about him and he is looking to be playing regularly wherever he goes.

"It looks like he wants to go to France and St Etienne are close to agreeing a loan for him.

"He wants to be playing in France as he is keen to make the step up from the Under-21 team into the full France national team and that is a big factor in his decision where to move."

Jose prefers Spain

Paris Saint Germain skipper Jose Karl Pierre-Fanfan says he will snub an approach from Portsmouth in preference to offers from Spain.

The rugged defender has attracted interest from Portsmouth, but says a move to England is not his preferred choice and his comments are likely to pave the way for a switch to Mallorca.

The Balearic Island club avoided relegation to the Segunda Liga and they are planning to build a squad in order to avoid the woes of last term.

The 29-year-old has been targeted by Mallorca and a move to Spain appeals to the defender.

"My desire is to leave," he told But! "Indeed I could go to Spain.

"I have never been attracted by the trail from Portsmouth.

"If I have no other options, I will remain in Paris."

PSG, meanwhile, are believed to be closing in on Milan midfielder Vikash Dhorasoo - with reports in France claiming a deal could be thrashed out next week.

Marseille have won the race to sign Strasbourg striker Mamadou Niang.

The Senegal international had attracted interest from West Ham, but he has opted to remain in France after striking a deal with Marseille.

L'OM have yet to reveal the details of the deal, but chairman Pape Diouf stated on Thursday afternoon that the contract length would likely be for four years - with Strasbourg securing a fee in the region of €7 million.

Niang has agreed terms with Marseille and is expected to be presented to the media on Saturday, subject to him passing a medical.

Fulham are interested in Sparta Prague's Czech international striker Tomas Jun.

The highly-rated 22-year-old was top-scorer in the Czech top-flight last season and has now come to the attention of Chris Coleman.

Jun is being tracked by a host of clubs, but now Czech Republic sources say Fulham are heading the queue for his services.

David Nehoda, who works on the player with his father Zdenek, confirmed there was interest.

"It is possible, but there is no official bid on the table," Nehoda told skysports.com.

"We will have to see what happens."

It is understood that Sparta are looking for €4 million (£2.7 million), although Fulham are unlikely to go any higher than £2 million

Marseille have made Greek midfielder Angelos Basinas their top transfer priority as they attempt to sign the star from under the noses of Birmingham.

The Panathinaikos star has agreed terms with Steve Bruce's side, as revealed by skysports.com, although no accord has yet been reached by the two clubs.

L'OM are now keen to stake their own claim for the Greek international, and have identified him as the most likely candidate to replace the departed duo of Eduardo Costa and Benoit Pedretti.

The 29-year-old looks likely to leave Pana this summer and could well end up at Stade Veoldrome if Jean Fernandez has his way, although with a year left on his current deal the Ligue 1 outfit must reach an agreement with their Greek counterparts.

L'OM officials will meet with the player's representatives on Tuesday, but if a deal fails to materialise they could turn to Greek international team-mate Costas Katsouranis.

The 26-year-old currently plies his trade for AEK Athens, and has previously attracted interest from Werder Bremen and Italian champions Juventus since impressing during Euro 2004.

Livorno are close to completing the signing of former Tottenham Hotspur striker Steffen Iversen.

The 28-year-old Norwegian international was linked with moves to both Lazio and Fiorentina in the January transfer window, although Livorno have now stolen a march on their Serie A rivals in an attempt to replace Igor Protti.

The Tuscan side's veteran striker decided to hang up his boots in recent weeks and Livorno have now reportedly agreed terms with Valerenga for their hit-man in a bid to cope with Protti's departure.

The two clubs are believed to have reached an accord although personal terms still need to be resolved with the man who failed to impress during his time at White Hart Lane.

Whilst his wages remain something of a sticking point it is anticipated that the hurdle will be cleared in the coming days - leaving Iversen free to link up with Serie A top scorer Cristiano Lucarelli at Armando Picchi.

Second N'Kufo at Twente

Twente Enschede have handed a trial to Yannick N'Kufo, the younger brother of their top scorer Blaise.

The 18-year-old arrived at training on Monday and has been given a month to earn a move to the Eredivisie.

The teenager is currently on the books of Swiss side Lausanne, but is clearly looking to join his elder brother in the Netherlands.

Yannick is of a similar mould to Blaise, as he is a powerful striker and the signs are suggesting he will be handed a spot in the club's academy, should he impress in the next month.

Christian Abbiati will be standing in between the Genoa sticks next season after he left Milan on Monday.

The goalkeeper has joined the newly promoted outfit on a one-year loan deal, with an option to buy next summer for £2.2m.

Abbiati was desperate for a move after spending a large proportion of the last three seasons as reserve behind Nelson Dida at the San Siro.

The Italian international wants regular first team football in an effort to make the Azzurri squad for the 2006 World Cup Finals.

Abbiati was also linked with moves to Palermo, Arsenal and Fiorentina but has opted for the port club.

Meanwhile, Jon Dahl Tomasson says he wants to stay with Milan despite their interest in signing Christian Vieri and Alberto Gilardino.

The Dane is a target for Lyon, Liverpool and Everton but maintains that he still wants to be wearing the Rossoneri shirt next term.

"I want to stay at Milan," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "The offers? None of those teams has the same value as Milan.

"They all play in the Champions’ League and are therefore clubs at a good level, but Milan are on another stage.

"It's difficult trying to predict the future but I won’t accept any more offers that may come in," he concluded.

Madouni made for Leverkusen

Bayer 04 Leverkusen have completed the signing of Algeria defender Ahmed Madouni from BV Borussia Dortmund.

'Ideal addition'
The 24-year-old has signed a two-year contract and will help coach Klaus Augenthaler plug the gap left by Emanuel Pogatetz's departure for English club Middlesbrough FC. "Ahmed is an ideal addition," Augenthaler said. "I needed another defender after Pogatetz asked to leave, because Jens Nowotny is still injured and Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker is very young."

Fourth arrival
Augenthaler added: "Ahmed knows his way around the Bundesliga and more importantly he can speak German." He becomes the fourth new face at the BayArena this summer after the arrivals of midfielder Simon Rolfes from TSV Alemannia Aachen, defender Athirson from Cruzeiro EC and forward Josip Tardic from NK Osijek

On a hectic day of transfer activity at Anfield, UEFA Champions League holders Liverpool FC have completed the signings of four players, including Spanish goalkeeper José Manuel Reina from Villarreal CF.

Spanish success
The 22-year-old Reina helped Villarreal to third place in the Primera División last season, conceding just ten goals at the Madrigal, having joined from FC Barcelona in summer 2002. Reina had an eight-year contract with the Spanish side, including a clause allowing Reina to study offers from Europe's biggest clubs.

National team
Reina has represented Spain at various youth levels and kept goal for his country in their 1999 UEFA European Under-16 Championship success. In May, he received his first senior call-up, although he was an unused substitute for Iker Casillas in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lithuania and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Zenden delight
Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez revealed Reina's signing at a press conference to unveil Dutch international Boudewijn Zenden, who has joined as a free agent after his contract with Middlesbrough FC expired on 1 July. "I am absolutely delighted to be signing for Liverpool," Zenden, 28, said. "When a club like this comes in for you, you don't need asking twice."

Benítez also announced that the English Premiership team had secured the services of Albacete Balompié's 20-year-old Chilean winger Mark González on loan, and Sevilla FC right-back Antonio Barragán, 18. "We have today introduced Bolo Zenden as a Liverpool player but we have also signed José Reina, the best goalkeeper in Spain, Mark González, the best player in Chile, and Antonio Barrágan," said the Liverpool manager. "We will be signing two or three more players this week."

Gerrard negotiations
Of speculation surrounding the future of Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, Benítez added: "I can assure our fans that we want Steven Gerrard to stay with us for the rest of his career. I renew my deal with Liverpool in four or five years, and when I do, I would like Stevie to be my next coach, assistant manager and maybe even the next manager after me. He can even have the chief scout position if he wants it.

Lyon must up Toulalan bid

Lyon may have to stump up €10 million if they are to secure the services of French starlet Jeremy Toulalan from Nantes, according to reports in France.

The 21-year-old star has been identified as a potential replacement for in-demand midfielder Michael Essien, and it is likely that Lyon will move for Toulalan should they lose the Ghanaian international to Chelsea or Real Madrid.

The French champions have already had a €6 million bid spurned by their Ligue 1 counterparts, as new Nantes supremo Rudi Roussillon is believed to be holding out for a more substantial figure for his young talent.

Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has already made public his admiration of Toulalan, with new boss Gerard Houllier keen to add the emerging talent to the summer signings of John Carew and Benoit Pedretti.

Les Canaris are relying heavily on Toulalan to form the future of Serge le Dizet's side, and it believed that only an offer of €10 million or more will ease his passage to Stade Gerland.
