Atletico strike Petrov deal

Atletico Madrid have finally secured a deal with Wolfsburg for Martin Petrov.

The German club have accepted a €10 million offer from Atletico, who should unveil the Bulgarian as their latest signing with 48 hours.

Atletico have been tracking Petrov for months and have had several offers rejected by the Bundesliga club - but they have now concluded negotiations after meeting the buy-out clause in the forward's contract.

"We would have liked to have kept Martin, but we must accept the clause in the contract," said Wolfsburg's director of sport Thomas Strunz.

Petrov joined Wolfsburg in 2002 from Servette for €3.5 million and he went on to net 32 goals in 116 appearances for the club.

Atleti have already captured Mateja Kezman from Chelsea and Maxi Rodriguez from Espanyol as they look to build a new-look side under Carlos Bianchi, who replaced Cesar Ferrando as coach at the end of the season.

Strunz has already begun his search for a replacement for Petrov in the Wolfsburg side and has been to Brazil looking for new talent.

Hedman to leave Celtic

Swedish goalkeeper Magnus Hedman has reached an accord with Celtic to leave Parkhead.

Hedman has been trying to negotiate the release from his Bhoys contract as he approaches a crossroads in his career.

The 32-year-old appears to have struck a deal with Celtic to leave and is considering where to go next, with a playing return to Sweden ruled out.

"It could be anything from a big challenge at a foreign club to retirement," Hedman told Expressen.

"I will not join a first division club just to play football. It has been excluded (a return to Sweden).

"The only club I would consider is AIK and they have already got a keeper."

The Sweden international has spent three years in Glasgow after joining in a £1.5 million deal from Coventry City.

He made 37 appearances for The Bhoys and has been out of favour since December, having spent part of the 2003/04 season on loan at Ancona.

The appointment of his former Coventry boss Gordon Strachan as Celtic chief has not made a difference to Hedman's Parkhead situation, particularly after the club signed Artur Boruc.

Djurgardens are bracing themselves for a renewed bid from Schalke for Soren Larsen.

The Swedish champions have already rejected a €1.3 million offer for the striker, who is keen to move to Germany.

Larsen has scored 10 goals for Djurgardens this season but the club are determined to achieve the best price for the hit-man.

Schalke are tipped to make a fresh offer for Larsen as Brazilian striker Ailton (pictured) is closing on a switch to Besiktas.

Djurgardens are aware of Ailton's proposed transfer but concede they are still to field a revised offer for Larsen from Schalke.

"I knew Ailton's move to Turkey was in the making," Djurgardens' club director Bosse Andersson told Sportbladet.

"But I haven't heard anything more from Schalke 04 regarding Soren Larsen."

TNS keeper in demand


A host of clubs are interested in Total Network Solutions goalkeeper Gerard Doherty, following his heroics against Liverpool.

Doherty produced a string of great saves in both UEFA Champions League qualifiers, as Welsh minnows TNS bowed out to The Reds.

Despite Liverpool's dominance, even Rafa Benitez admitted that Doherty was the best player on show over the two legs.

Now the former 23-year-old former Derby keeper is being tracked by a number of Football League clubs, from League Two to The Championship.

Doherty's agent Gino Culbertson admitted his client was ready to return to English football.

"I am very proud of the way Gerard played, he did a wonderful job and just proved what we always knew," he told skysports.com.

"He has been unlucky in his career so far, but there is now a great deal of interest following his wonderful performances.

"Both Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher congratulated him on his performances and that was great for him."

Bordeaux have strengthened their squad with the capture of South American duo Edixon Perea and Alejandro Alonso.

Colombia international Perea and Argentine winger Alonso have both signed four-year contracts with Les Girondins.

Perea has joined from Atletico Nacional with the striker having proved himself to be a regular goalscorer in South America.

Speedy wide man Alonso links up with Bordeaux from Huracan and is expected to be a potent force on the flank.

With Bordeaux's aim to clinch a spot in Europe next season, the acquisitions of Perea and Alonso will add a touch of flair to their squad.

Djuric has Dutch admirers

A number of clubs are hot on the trail of Halmstads star Dusan Djuric.

Ajax, Feyenoord, AZ Alkmaar and FC Copenhagen have all been checking on the form of the 20-year-old.

It is understood that Djuric is receptive to a switch to Holland, although the midfielder is not motivated by financial rewards.

"It means that things are going well with my professional career," he told Expressen.

"I find it important that, at an eventual new club, I will come to my right level concerning football and I can develop myself.

"Money doesn't matter to me."

Ajax are favourites to land the youngster with scout John Steen Olsen a regular follower of his performances.

Celtic have completed the signing of Brighton & Hove Albion defender Adam Virgo.

The 22-year-old is superbly versatile, having also played in defence and attack, scoring his fair share of goals when leading the line.

The Bhoys have agreed a deal worth up to £1.5 million with The Seagulls, with Virgo agreeing personal terms on his deal on Wednesday.

Hoops boss Gordon Strachan is struggling for defensive options after recent injury problems, but he concedes that Virgo needs to get some pre-season under his belt before he is ready to play.

"Adam's a player I've known about for a few years," said Strachan. "He is still a raw lad, but he has got good potential.

"But he's not really had an opportunity to have a proper pre-season.

"He's not really ready to go straight in."

Virgo was reluctant to leave The Withdean Stadium, but says a move to Celtic was too good to turn down.

"It's a dream come true," said Virgo. "No disrespect to Brighton, they have given me some great years down there, but the offer from Celtic was too good to turn down.

"Being here today was a great experience for me, and signing the contract was a dream.

"It's every boy's ambition to play for a massive team, and Celtic are one of the top teams in the UK and are known all over the world.

"I wouldn't think too many players would turn down an offer from Celtic."

Former Danish international Thomas Rytter has left Bundesliga side Wolfsburg and returned to his native country, where he is set to sign a three-year contract with Brondby.

Although no financial details were revealed, the Danish champions are expected to pay a transfer fee of around €500,000 for the right back.

The 31-year-old, who has recently struggled to defend his first-team status at the Volkswagon-Arena, has already linked up with his new club and is expected to put pen-to-paper on his new contract later this week.

Rytter joined Wolfsburg in 2001 from FC Copenhagen and starred in 87 Bundesliga games for the Wolves.

Sporting Lisbon have clinched the signing of Deivid from Bordeaux.

The Brazilian striker has penned a four-year deal at the Portuguese SuperLiga club after Sporting paid a fee in the region of €3 million to secure his services.

Bordeaux were willing to sell Deivid after he failed to live up to expectations following his move from Cruzeiro in 2003.

Deivid spent the last year-and-a-half at Santos after falling down the pecking order with Les Girondins.

His performances at Santos alerted Sporting and they have moved to take him to Lisbon.

Meanwhile, Bordeaux have snapped up former Paris Saint Germain ace Laurent Leroy.

Leroy has signed a one-year deal at Bordeaux after impressing on trial and he will help fill the void left by the departure of Deivid.
