Trialist Update

  Wolves will not be pursuing any further interest in Brazilian trialist Jeronimo Soares.However, his fellow countryman, Guilherme Finkler, will be staying at Molineux for a while longer.

  The 21-year-old midfielder has had his trial at the club extended into next week so the coaching team can take a further look at him.

  Finkler is expected to play some part in this evening's game at Tranmere Rovers.

Kenny set for run-out

Kenny Cunningham is set for his first Sunderland appearance against Rotherham tomorrow.

The Republic of Ireland centre-back, who has trained with the Black Cats for the last week, will travel to South Yorkshire with the rest of the squad in the morning.

Coach Kevin Richardson said: "We expect Kenny [Cunningham] to play but we don't know yet whether he will start or come on."

Former Birmingham skipper Cunningham is in line to join Sunderland after holding talks last week.

Cunningham is a former international team-mate of Sunderlands chairman-in-waiting Niall Quinn.

Sunderland take on League One outfit Rotherham at Millmoor (7.45pm) in their second pre-season game. They will look to build on the 3-0 victory over Forest Green at the weekend.

Defender Signs

  Wolves have today completed the signing of former Sunderland defender, Gary Breen.

  The 32-year-old Irish international has put pen to paper on a two-year deal. The player was a free agent after parting company with the Black Cats in May.

  After completing the paperwork this morning, prior to his first training session, Gary spoke exclusively to wolves.co.uk. "Talks have been ongoing throughout the summer," he revealed.

  "I am happy it's now been completed and I can get down to things.

  "Things are different for Wolves at this time, and a lot like they were at Sunderland two years ago when a lot of the experienced players left and young players were brought into the side, along with players from the lower leagues.

  "It wasn't easy but we won the First Division Championship that year and we were promoted.

  "I don't really know any of the boys here, although I have played against several of them, and I played against Jody Craddock in schoolboy and youth football, as young professionals.

  "As an outsider looking in I have found it hard to see why Wolves haven't made the top six in the last couple of years, we identified them as one of our biggest threats when I was at Sunderland, and now I am excited by the prospect of playing my part in helping the club mount a challenge."

  Breen spent three years at the Stadium of Light, leaving at the end of last season after making 113 first team starts, and scoring seven goals.

  He'd previously spent spells with West Ham, Coventry, Birmingham, Peterborough, Gillingham and Maidstone after starting his career with Charlton.

Nick Barmby is pleased with the progress he is making as he bids to make a return to first team action and is looking forward to the new season.

Barmby has been out of action since January with a hamstring injury but is hoping to get some match action under his belt next week.

"I've been training with the rest of the lads this week and everything feels good, touch wood," said Barmby.

"Obviously I want to get back playing as soon as possible. We've got four pre-season games left and hopefully I can be involved in two of them."

Barmby has been working under the guidance of physio Simon Maltby for the last few months and, for the past ten days, with new fitness coordinator Stuart Ayles.

Although the work has been tough, the former Premiership player is happy to do it to try and be ready for the start of the new season.

"To be fair, any pre-season training is hard work. The lads will moan about it a bit but we all have to do it.

"The training has been good. It has been hard, but the main goal is to get yourself fit for the start of the season.

"Stuart has certainly been putting us through our paces since he came in. The intensity has been good and a lot of the stuff we have been doing is match related.

"Everything has been of benefit to us. We have to work hard and you can't ignore that fact. We have a good set of professionals at this club and everybody is getting on with the work."

With a new manager coming in over the summer, there might have been a danger of the injured players being pushed to one side.

But Barmby says that has not been the case and he has been impressed with Phil Parkinson since his arrival.

The new Championship season kicks off in 17 days time and Barmby is expecting it to be a much tougher league than last year.

"I think it will be tougher this year with the teams that have come down. The relegated teams haven't got rid of their better players and have kept strong squads.
"The teams that struggled last season, like Southampton and Norwich, will have better seasons so the division will be of a good standard so we need to be prepared and also we need to be mentally strong.

"It's certainly going to be exciting because our fans will be going away to the likes of The Hawthorns and The Stadium of Light as well as going back to Elland Road. I think everybody is looking forward to it."

Although he predicts a tough season ahead, Barmby is sure that the Tigers can improve on their position last year, especially with the new players added to the squad.

"I'm looking forward to seeing them all play and I'm sure they will all make us stronger as a team."

Palace director of football Bob Dowie said: "Charlie joined on a week-to-week trial at first but he has impressed us so much we are giving him a couple of years.

Clapham Could Be Next Signing

  Former Blues defender Jamie Clapham has joined Wolves for training today.

  The out-off-contract 30-year-old will be spending the rest of the week at Compton with the view to possibly signing a contract.

  Clapham began his career as a trainee at Tottenham but established himself at Ipswich Town before moving to Birmingham in January 2003.

Breen moves to Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers have strengthened their squad with the capture of Republic of Ireland international Gary Breen.

The 32-year-old was available on a free transfer having been released by Sunderland at the end of last season, and has now penned a two-year deal with the Championship side.

The arrival of the former Coventry and West Ham defender, who was The Black Cats' club captain during their relegation from The Premiership last season, will help to cushion the blow of losing Joleon Lescott to Everton.

Wolves are still without a manager after the departure of Glenn Hoddle, but Breen is now raring to go as the Midlands side target a top six finish in the coming campaign.

"Talks have been ongoing throughout the summer," Breen told the club's official website.

"I am happy it's now been completed and I can get down to things.

Breen will first meet his former team-mates on November 25, when Sunderland visit Molineux.

Meanwhile, stand-in Wolves boss Stuart Gray has praised Brazilian trialist Guilherme Finkler for his pre-season performances.

The Juventude midfielder has been trying his luck at Molineux with team-mate Jeronimo Soares and has clearly caught the eye so far.

After scoring twice against Hednesford Town, Finkler picked up an injury in a 2-2 draw with Tranmere Rovers, and Gray admits he has been impressed with the South American.

"He's done very well, all credit to the boy, and he's putting in some real quality from dead balls," said Gray.

"The pleasing thing for the lads in the box is that with this service coming in, they can make runs and be aggressive.

"But it was a heavy tackle underneath his shin so we'll monitor him to see how it is - it looked a bit of a strong challenge."
