Bolton Wanderers are in talks to sign Besiktas' experienced full back Juanfran on loan, according to the Turkish club.

The Spanish defender, who recently turned 29, has 10 international caps to his name.

Juanfran is vastly experienced having played for Celtic Vigo, Valencia and Levante before trying his hand at Turkish football.

Besiktas have stated Bolton are in talks with a view to securing Juanfran's services on loan.

"We have started talks with Bolton with regard to loaning Juanfran to them," read a Besiktas statement.

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce is keen to bolster his backline having lost Florent Laville, Fernando Hierro and Vincent Candela this summer.

According to reports from France Pompey are set to sign Real Sociedad and former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld and Benfica's Norwegian striker Azar Karades on loan.       

The Quay radio station, who have a team working in France covering Pompey's training camp, are reporting that two players are expected to sign for the club imminently.

Goalkeeper Sander Westerveld (31), who had a productive spell at Liverpool and striker Azar Karades (23), who is currently at Benfica having played for SK Brann and Rosenborg, are said to be 'flying in' for medicals.

Westerveld is expected to join the Pompey squad later on Wednesday and could make his debut in Saturday's meeting with Monaco at Bayonne.

Chairman Milan Mandaric said of the Westerveld deal: 'He is a very experienced goalkeeper who had good success in Liverpool. He had two seasons there and I am quite sure our supporters have heard of him. We are very happy to have that kind of experience.'

Westerveld was between the sticks as Liverpool won four trophies in 2000 under Gerard Houllier.

Portsmouth have signed former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld on a free transfer.

Michael Bridges has agreed a one-year deal to join League One side Bristol City.

The 26-year-old will have a medical over the weekend before completing his move from Premiership new boys Sunderland next week.

Bridges's contract at Ashton Gate will be with a further year's option and, should his medical go according to plan, he may make his debut in Monday's pre-season friendly at arch-rivals Bristol Rovers.

"It's a very exciting signing because Michael has proved himself a Premiership player and is still at a very good age," Robins boss Brian Tinnion told the club's official website.

Bridges's impending arrival is the sixth new face to come to City this summer, with former Stoke City defender Richard Keogh having now completed his move to the West Country outfit.

Keogh signed a two-year contract after completing his medical at the club on Friday.

The same cannot be said for trialist Dave Burborough, with the Bishop Sutton striker having opted not to turn professional with the League One side.

Tinnion offered Burborough a one-year deal to join The Robins, but the player has decided to remain a semi-professional for the moment.

Meanwhile, the club have confirmed that centre back Danny Coles was arrested for being drunk and disorderly in a bar in Newport, Shropshire.

"We are very disappointed that one of our players has been arrested and will investigate the matter thoroughly," stated Robins chief executive Colin Sexstone.

"Once this has been done, the club will then take the appropriate action."

Newcastle close on Anelka

Newcastle United are closing in on a deal for Nicolas Anelka.

French souces insist that The Magpies are set to conclude a move for the 26-year-old striker, who only moved to Fenerbahce in January.

Fener are reportedly ready to let Anelka leave, but only for the €11 million fee which they paid Manchester City for him.

Newcastle have so far bid €8.5 million, but they are ready to up their offer and could even sew up the deal within 48 hours.

Magpies chief Graeme Souness revealed on Friday talks over Anelka and Fulham's Luis Boa Morte were ongoing.

However, while the deal for Anelka appears to be going smoothly - Cottagers chief Chris Coleman has told Newcastle to 'put up or shut-up' in their bid for the Portuguese winger.

"If Luis wants to join Newcastle and Newcastle want to buy Luis Boa Morte then they are going to have to put up a hell of a lot of money for him," said Coleman.

"I am sick of all the talk, in all honesty. They need to put their money on the table. Otherwise they have got to shut up and let us get on with our season."

Newcastle, who are still being linked with Middlesbrough's Mark Viduka, are looking to seal both Anelka and Boa Morte by the start of next week

Saints fail with Maccarone bid

Massimo Maccarone has turned down a move to Southampton, skysports.com can reveal.

The Italian international spent last season on loan at Parma and Siena, and Middlesbrough are happy for him to spend next term away from Teesside.

However, talks with Siena have broken down and a deal does not look close as the Tuscan outfit are refusing to pay Maccarone's entire salary.

Southampton were alerted to the fact that Maccarone's move to Siena had stalled and enquired about taking him on a season-long loan.

Boro were happy with the deal, but Maccarone has rejected the move as he is not willing to drop down to The Championship.

"Massimo will not be moving to Southampton," his agent Paolo Fabbri told skysports.com.

"Next season he will either be playing for Middlesbrough or Siena.

"He has an offer to play in Serie A, so why would he want to drop down to the First Division.

"Massimo has made it clear, and have informed Keith Lamb [Boro chief executive], that he wants his future sorting out.

"He will return to Middlesbrough on Monday or Tuesday if nothing is done with Siena.

"Massimo does not want to play for any other English club, other than Middlsbrough."

Fabbri also denied Italian reports that Boro and Maccarone could mutually agree to a contract termination.

"Massimo has every intention of seeing out his contract, that is his desire," he added.

"He does not want to cancel anything with Middlesbrough and he still has some hope of returning and doing well."

Tottenham are reported to have made an approach for Auxerre striker Benjamin Mwaruwari.

The Zimbabwean international, known simply as Benjani, has refused to return to training with Auxerre - with the hope he can engineer a move elsewhere.

Lyon are known to be keen on the 26-year-old, but now he is interesting a number of clubs from England - particularly Tottenham.

Benjani is due back in France this week with his mentor Jomo Sono, and they will meet with Auxerre officials to discuss his future plans.

Charlton and Everton were credited with an interest earlier this summer.
