Improved bid for Kleberson

Besiktas have upped their offer for Manchester United midfielder Kleberson.

The Turkish side have joined Celta Vigo in the chase for the Brazil international, who appears likely to leave Old Trafford.

Kleberson, who played in United's friendly defeat to Kashima Antlers on Thursday, has struggled to establish himself during two years with The Red Devils.

United have already rejected bids from Celta and Besiktas but manager Sir Alex Ferguson is willing to listen to further offers for the 26-year-old.

Neither club have met United's valuation but reports in Turkey claim Besiktas have now increased their offer to €3 million (£2 million).

This is still significantly lower than the £6 million that United paid to Atletico Paranaense to bring Kleberson to The Premiership in 2003.

Whether The Red Devils would be willing to accept such a loss is unclear and the club will hope the battle between Besiktas and Celta will ultimately lead to a bigger fee.

As Besiktas await a response from Old Trafford, they have lined up Iranian midfielder Javad Nekounam as their alternative to Kleberson.

Nilsson nears Saints exit

Sweden international Mikael Nilsson is close to leaving Southampton to join Panathinaikos.

Nilsson has endured a frustrating time at St Mary's since arriving at the club in a £500,000 deal from Halmstads last summer.

The versatile Scandinavian made 21 appearances for Saints but featured only sporadically after Harry Redknapp was appointed as manager.

Redknapp has been culling his squad over the summer and will not block Nilsson's exit from the South Coast.

Nilsson had been interesting Rennes but the right back, who can also play in midfield, is now poised for a move to Greece.

Panathinaikos have agreed a €1 million (£700,000) fee with Southampton, with the Championship club making a minor profit on Nilsson.

The 27-year-old is due in Athens on Friday to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms before sealing his switch to Panathinaikos.

Spurs in shock double swoop

Tottenham are poised to complete a sensational double Dutch swoop after having a bid for Andy van der Meyde accepted by Internazionale, having already captured Edgar Davids.

The Italian club have consented to an offer from Spurs' chairman Daniel Levy and talks are at an advanced stage for flying winger van der Meyde.

Davids came through his medical successfully on Thursday, but Tottenham held back on presenting the combative midfielder as they hope to present both players on Friday with van der Meyde already in the country as part of Inter's pre-season tour.

Everton were also interested in the duo and hoped that the lure of UEFA Champions League football would swing things their way, but Martin Jol persuaded Davids to move to White Hart Lane and has used the Dutch connection to land van der Meyde.

Inter chief, Massimo Moratti, confirmed that the club have spoken to both Spurs and Everton about the duo, but negotiations have reportedly been concluded since his announcement.

"We have been dealing with Everton and Tottenham over the futures of Davids and Van der Meyde," Moratti said.

Inter are ready to offload former Ajax star van der Meyde as he has struggled to settle in Italy following his move two summers ago.

The winger was on the verge of joining Monaco earlier this month, but Didier Deschamps pulled the plug on the deal after he decided that the Dutchman was not committed to signing.

Now Van Der Meyde's agent, Chiel Dekker, has revealed that the player wants to kick-start his career at another club with White Hart Lane almost certain to be his next destination.

"At the moment there is nothing official, but Andy wants to move on as he has been at Inter for two years and he wants to get back to how he was at Ajax and play regular football," Dekker added.

Skysports.com can confirm that Lincoln starlet Jack Hobbs is expected to complete his dream move to Liverpool on Monday.

Reports in the English press had suggested that the deal was done and dusted although the 16-year-old must still complete his medical at Anfield on Friday.

The Reds have beaten off competition from Premiership rivals Arsenal for the signature of the talented stopper, and are poised to make Hobbs their seventh summer arrival after claiming the UEFA Champions League crown.

Hobbs's agent Charles Collymore has told skysports.com that, awaiting the completion of a medical, his client will join Rafa Benitez's ranks in the next few days.

"Yep it's pretty much done, we are hoping that his medical will be done today then are expecting everything to be completed on Monday," Collymore told skysports.com.

"I'm in Liverpool on Monday to hopefully complete everything."

The Reds took full advantage of Arsenal's inability to reach an accord with Lincoln as they took Hobbs on trial and wowed the youngster.

Collymore voiced his belief that all parties would be content with the arrangement settled on after The Gunners missed out, and stated that Hobbs was looking forward to making his mark at Anfield.

"That was purely a commercial decision between Lincoln and Arsenal, they couldn't get their commercial agreement," Collymore continued.

"Jack had quite a long time to get acclimatised to Liverpool, the management down there treated him wonderfully well and Lincoln felt that the offer that was made to them by Liverpool was acceptable and consistent with their requirements.

"So it was great for the lad and it was great for Lincoln.

"He is at Liverpool to be at Liverpool, he will become a first year pro on his 17th birthday and his idea is to be part of Liverpool's youth system."

Whilst the details of the deal are closely guarded, Collymore confirmed that as part of the transfer Liverpool may come to Sincil Bank for a money-spinning friendly against the League Two outfit in the future.

"As far as a friendly is concerned that is something that has certainly been discussed."

Stoica links up with Rams

Romania international Alin Stoica is reportedly on trial with Derby County.

The midfielder is aiming to resurrect his career in England, with reports in Belgium claiming Stoica is training at Pride Park.

Rams boss Phil Brown has been looking to add depth to his squad and is keen to assess the fitness of Stoica.

The 25-year-old has struggled with injuries during the past 12 months and is hoping to impress Brown over the coming days.

Stoica has been with three clubs during the past year, having cancelled his contract with Club Brugge last December.

He joined Siena on a six-month deal in January but quit the Italian club in April after failing to make an appearance due to a niggling injury.

The schemer then finished the season back in his homeland with National Bucharest but is now chasing a return to a major league.

FC Brussels were interested in taking Stoica back to Belgium but it is understood he is now training with Championship club Derby.

Sunderland have continued their plans for the new season by snapping up Alan Stubbs on a free transfer.

Stubbs has been looking for a new club after seeing out his contract at Everton.

The former Bolton and Celtic man left Goodison Park earlier this summer after failing to agree a new deal at Everton.

Stubbs has signed a one-year deal with the option of another year at the Stadium of Light.

The 33-year-old, who is Sunderland's seventh signing of the summer, was delighted to make the move to Wearside.

"I've been impressed with everything about the club," Stubbs told the club's official website.

"The training ground is brilliant and I've played at the Stadium of Light before, it's a fantastic venue.

"I'm very happy to have signed for Sunderland and am looking forward to the season and the challenge ahead.

"I know Sunderland have some good players but they have a young squad and hopefully my experience will help them."
