Birmingham have taken French full back Olivier Bernard on trial.

The 25-year-old is currently without a club after departing relegated Southampton at the end of last season.

Bernard moved to St Mary's in January after falling out of favour at Newcastle - after he refused to pen a new contract.

Now Steve Bruce is considering a swoop for the left back, who was rated very highly during his time on Tyneside.

Bruce actually tried to sign Bernard in January, before he moved to Southampton.

Bolton Wanderers have completed the signing of former Spurs and England 'keeper Ian Walker on a one-year deal.

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce told his club's official website: "It has been a frustrating time of late but having said that, I am delighted that we have acquired a goalkeeper of Ian Walker's ability.

"The goalkeeping area did concern me at the end of the season, but we now have three quality 'keepers that will match any other team in the Premiership. Competition for places is going to be healthy."

Liverman

Charlton have completed the signing of Uruguayan centre-back Gonzalo Sorondo on a year's loan from Inter Milan.

Complications over the player's work permit delayed the deal but the 25-year-old has now signed for the Addicks, having spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace.

Charlton have an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the 2005-06 season.

Bolton and West Ham are both desperate to capture the Israeli, who will cost £2.4 million and if Pardew is confident of winning the race, he is certainly keeping his cards close to his chest.

"I think that the situation is going to be ongoing for a couple of days," Pardew told Sky Sports News. "I think there's no mystery to the fact that we're involved and Bolton are involved.

"I think he (Benayoun) is a very good player, one club is going to get lucky I think."

Meanwhile, West Ham's new goalkeeper Roy Carroll has admitted that he is not taking his position for granted since leaving Manchester United, and he is expecting a tough fight for the number one jersey at Upton Park.

Carroll revealed: "I'm looking forward to it. There are good goalkeepers who will be battling the whole way until the start of the season.

"I'll be fighting for the number one spot and hopefully we'll get a good start to the season."

Biscan signs for Pana

Igor Biscan has signed for Panathinaikos, despite late interest from Spartak Moscow.

The Croatian midfielder had his pick of clubs after he was released by Liverpool at the end of last season.

Biscan spent four-and-a-half years at Anfield but was axed by Rafa Benitez following the club's success in the UEFA Champions League.

He initially appeared poised to join Besiktas in Turkey while there was also interest in Germany from Stuttgart.

On Thursday, Biscan travelled for Greece for talks with Panathinaikos and quickly found agreement on a three-year contract.

However, Russian outfit Spartak expressed a willingness to sign the 25-year-old but their move arrived too late.

Biscan has inked his contract with Pana, after successfully passing a medical, and he is now tied to the Greek giants for the next three seasons.

Fulham have completed the signing of Danish full back Niclas Jensen.

The Denmark international has signed a two-year deal at Craven Cottage after the West London club agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund.

The 31-year-old has sealed a move back to The Premiership, where he has previously starred for Manchester City.

Jensen spent 18 months with City, playing over 50 league games, before departing for Borussia in 2003 for £750,000.

Fulham are now understood to have paid a similar fee to land Jensen - who is no relation to Cottagers midfielder Claus.

"This summer has proved very productive for us in the transfer market and I am happy with the acquisitions we have made," Fulham chief Chris Coleman told the club's website.

"The chairman has again shown his continued support by allowing me to continue strengthening."
