Everton and Charlton are lining up £2m bids for Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell, who was recently named as the Championship's best player.

Addicks boss Alan Curbishley and Toffees counterpart David Moyes have already strengthened their squads this summer and Sidwell, 22, would make another ideal addition to the ranks.

He was recently been chosen by FourFourTwo magazine as the best player in England outside of the Premiership.

However, Reading are likely to hold out for a higher fee for the former Arsenal trainee, who enjoyed loan spells at Brentford and Brighton before his move to the Madejski Stadium in January 2003.

Sidwell has shone with the Royals, scoring 15 goals from central midfield in exactly 100 league appearances.

Aston Villa and Sunderland are also said to be monitoring the Wandsworth-born star's progress

Hibernian have snapped up Yvan Tomatula - nephew of Tresor Lomana Lua Lua.

The 17-year-old moved to England when Lua Lua signed for Newcastle from Colchester, and he remained in the area after his uncle moved to Portsmouth.

Hibs have now handed him a two-year professional deal after he impressed the Scottish club's coaching staff.

He was first spotted playing for renowned Newcastle amateur side Wallsend Boys Club and he then impressed during a trial spell late last season.

"We play a lot of friendly games, particularly against teams from the North East of England and Yvan stood out like a sore thumb in a match with Wallsend Boys Club," said Hibs' academy director John Park

"I think that's sometimes a measure of a player, if he's doing well against your side which you think is itself of good quality.

"He ran us ragged, he has a range of skills which are fantastic, his ability on the ball, being able to see a pass in to the strikers, all the right attributes.

"Yvan is different. The game isn't all about having the same type of player. We brought Yvan up for the best part of a month at the end of last season but we've only just been able to sign him up.

"He still has a lot of work to do but he looks an exciting player and we are providing him with that platform to see how far he can go.

"His immediate target has to be to make himself a permanent fixture in our youth team and then he should be trying to move up to the reserves at some point in time."

The Reds are eager to sign a top-class central defender before the start of the season, as they aim to make a vast improvement on their Premiership campaign from last time round.

And manager Rafael Benitez has targeted Upson for a £5million move to Anfield, although Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce is eager to keep the former Arsenal man at St Andrews’.

"We want to build around our best players - and Matt knows what we think of him," said Bruce of the 26-year-old, who is said to be keen on quitting the Midlands club for European football.

Liverpool, though, will not be deterred from making a bid for Upson, with an initial offer set to be made for the player some time this week.

Portsmouth are set to sign Liverpool left-back Gregory Vignal on a free transfer. The 23-year-old has agreed terms and passed a medical.

Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric told his club's official website: "We are very pleased that another quality signing is set to join the club and who can be an asset to us in a number of positions.

"He has shown his worth at Rangers last season and the competition for places at Pompey will be that much healthier."

Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie added: "Gregory is a versatile player who can play in a number of positions.

"When his chance came at Rangers he showed what a fine all round player he is and though he is a defender he likes to get forward.

"He is the sort of player who will fit in well."
