Sunderland sign Bassila



Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy has agreed to sign midfielder Christian Bassila from Strasbourg.

The 27-year-old Frenchman is expected to sign a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light if he passes a medical and agrees personal terms.

"Hopefully he'll be here on Monday," said McCarthy. "We are just waiting for international clearance.

"He's a defensive midfielder player who can play in the back four as well. He's big and tall and very powerful."

It will be Bassila's second spell in England after he spent time on loan at West Ham in 2001.

Bassila, who began his career at Lyon, is a former French Under-21 international.

Pompey sign Denmark star Priske



Portsmouth have signed defender Brian Priske for an undisclosed fee from Belgian side Genk.

The Danish international, 28, has signed a three-year deal and may play against Aston Villa on Tuesday - if international clearance is received.

Chief executive Peter Storrie told Pompey's website: "Brian is a versatile defender, who is a right-back for his country and centre-back for his club.

"I think he showed people his capabilities in the win over England."

Manager Alain Perrin had earlier hoped to sign three new players before the transfer window closes on 31 August - after his side lost their first two Premiership games of the season.

Perrin is also interested in Chelsea's England Under-21 striker Carlton Cole.

Cole was on loan at Aston Villa last season and chairman Milan Mandaric is understood to have sanctioned a £2m bid for the player.

"We have to be stronger in each part of the pitch and get people on the end of Laurent Robert's work," Perrin explained.

"That is why Carlton Cole is one we are looking at. Cole is well down the pecking order after returning to Chelsea and may welcome a move.

"But he will demand high wages to match his Stamford Bridge terms and the pay-scale he was on at Villa.

"It is not only players on loan from abroad we are interested in but, of course, all deals depend on the price.

"We know there will be a late scramble to sign players just before the transfer break but we have a lot of people in mind and will make our choices at the right time."

Wigan Athletic are aiming to end their search for a striker by signing Turkey international Fatih Tekke.

The 27-year-old has been looking to leave his current club Trabzonspor throughout the summer and Wigan hope to win the chase for his services.

Trabzonspor have previously been reluctant to sell the prolific hot shot, who scored 30 goals in the Turkish league last season.

But with Trabzonspor failing to reach the UEFA Champions League group phase, they may be forced to part with Tekke before the close of the transfer window.

Latics boss Paul Jewell has missed out on the hit-man twice in the past but is pressing ahead with a third attempt to take Tekke to The JJB Stadium.

"Tekke is a player we are interested in," said Jewell.

"We have tried to get him a couple of times before and he is one we are pursuing again at the moment."

Jewell is desperate to bring in a new forward before the end of the month after selling Nathan Ellington to West Brom, and missing out on Dean Ashton and Robert Earnshaw.

But to avoid further frustration in the transfer market, Jewell will have to fend off interest from clubs across the continent to bring Tekke to The Premiership.

Deportivo La Coruna, Valencia, Stuttgart and Hertha Berlin have all been interested in Tekke over the summer and may rival Wigan for his signature.

Rafael Benitez has this afternoon confirmed his interest in signing
Bolton winger Stelios Giannakopoulos.

The Reds boss is hoping to bring the Greek international to Anfield
before next week's transfer deadline as he looks to fill the right midfield
berth in his team.

Benitez, who is also hoping to recruit a new central defender before
the transfer window closes next Wednesday, has revealed he spoke to Bolton boss Sam Allardyce after last night's game at Anfield to see if a deal is
possible.

He said: "Our chief executive Rick Parry is talking with their
Chairman about the possibility of a deal.

"I also spoke to Sam Allardyce about the player last night because we
need to know if he'd be available. At this moment Stelios is one possibility
for us.

"We are working hard to strengthen the squad before the deadline."
