Espanyol to win Saviola race

Sources in Spain claim that Javier Saviola is almost certain to join Barcelona's city rivals Espanyol on loan.

The Argentine striker has been informed for a second season running by Barca boss Frank Rijkaard that he does not feature in his first-team plans.

The slight South American spent last term on loan at Monaco but was hopeful of getting the chance to re-establish himself at Camp Nou this time around.

That has not proved to be the case, however, and Barca's free transfer capture of Santiago Ezquerro has merely served to push him further down the pecking order.

Atletico Madrid and Sevilla were thought to be in the race to land Saviola on loan, but while Barca have now revealed that Real Zaragoza and Benfica are also in the hunt for the 23-year-old, it is Espanyol who are quite clearly in pole position.

Sources close to the Catalan outfit insist the deal is all but done, although it has been suggested in some quarters that a few Barca directors are reticent about seeing the player end up at their city rivals.

To smooth the deal, Espanyol have offered to pay up to 75 percent of Saviola's huge salary, a deal that Barca - who revealed debts of some €200 million on Thursday - seem certain to consent to.

Saviola himself has made it clear that Espanyol is his first-choice destination if staying at Camp Nou is an impossibility.

It would enable the former River Plate star to remain at the property he has in the city from his time at Barca and Espanyol's recent signing of his compatriot and close friend Pablo Zabaleta is another factor in their favour

Galletti clinches Madrid move

Atletico Madrid have wrapped up a deal for Real Zaragoza's Argentine winger Luciano Galletti.

The 25-year-old has agreed a three-year deal and passed a routine medical on Thursday.

The Argentina international will now be officially presented by Atletico on Friday and becomes coach Carlos Bianchi's fourth major signing since arriving earlier in the summer.

Zaragoza were keen to retain the services of Galletti and had offered the right-sided midfielder a new contract, but the South American was keen to move on.

With the extension on offer from Zaragoza some way less lucrative than the deal handed to compatriot Gabriel Milito, he accepted Atletico's offer and Zaragoza opted to cash in on him now rather than lose him for nothing in 12 months' time.

Although no fee for the transfer has been confirmed, a figure of around €2-3 million is understood to have been agreed.

As a result of Galletti's arrival, Atletico have agreed to let Uruguayan midfielder Marcelo Sosa join Primera rivals Osasuna on loan while Danish winger Jesper Gronkjaer also seems likely to be allowed to join Stuttgart.

THE TERESA HERERRA TORUNAMENT TAKES SHAPE

Friday 29th July, 2005 -- In the past seasons, the Teresa Hererra tournament was one of the first opportunities for the coach to test his team against tougher rivals in preparation of the Liga debut. But this summer, Depor meet Newcastle in the Intertoto semifinals and could face Marseille or Lazio in the final, putting an extra burden on Lendoiro to organize a competitive friendly tournament. Finally, it seems that AC Milan, Nacional Montevideo and Atletico Peñarol are the teams chosen to take part in the Teresa Hererra.

THE MONTEVIDEO DERBY COULD BE PLAYED IN A CORUNA
The tournament is scheduled as usual in August, just before the Liga season starts. The other three teams in the tournament are set, although there was no official confirmation for Peñarol available yesterday. Still, their participation is considered a sure thing, which means that two presigious South American football teams will take part. The matches are scheduled between Friday, the 12th and Sunday, the 14th of August, on a weekend, in order to give Caparros men the time to recover in case they play in the Intertoto Cup during midweek. This means that Caparros will also be able to test his team against more latin adversaries two weeks before the Liga starts.

Nacional is coached by Martín Lasarte, an ex-Deportivo player, while Peñarol is lead on the bench by a real Spanish legend, Fernando Morena. The participation of the two clubs and their possible direct encounter has been noticed by the Uruguayan press, stirring up interest in the tournament even in South America. Nacional will come also because of a pending deal concerning Abreu, while Milan are coming as a result of the Coloccini transfer.

Kromkamp poised for Spain

Villarreal have agreed a deal to sign AZ Alkmaar full back Jan Kromkamp.

The Holland international had been expected to leave AZ earlier in the summer, with Porto and Valencia fighting it out for his signature.

Valencia appeared poised to land the right back in a €7 million deal but the move fell through, much to Kromkamp's disappointment.

But his switch to La Liga is now back on after Villarreal revealed they have reached an accord, in principle, with AZ.

Kromkamp is likely to sign a four or five-year contract with Villarreal, who will play Everton in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

Gonzalo still wants Prem move

Bolton could be ready to firm up their interest in Valencia's Gonzalo De Los Santos.

The Uruguayan midfielder is surplus to requirements at La Mestalla and now looks set for a summer move.

Spanish side Malaga have been linked and De Los Santos admitted he could be tempted by them.

"The only team in Spain I would I would go to is Malaga, although there are other options if I leave," he said.

However, the South American reiterated his desire to move to The Premiership.

"I like a lot that competition and I am hoping some interest could become firm," he said.

"I cannot continue anymore here, I am training alone but I am doing very well. The English season starts on the 12th [August] and I would like to be in a new team by then."
