fr:soccernet.com--Fulham are facing a busy week in the transfer market with Gabriel Zakuani's arrival signalling the start of a flurry of activity at Craven Cottage.
Congo centre-back Zakuani, 20, completed a £1.5million switch from Leyton Orient last night as Fulham boss Chris Coleman moved to strengthen his frail defence.
But it is in attack Fulham could see the biggest changes with Steed Malbranque and Collins John set to leave the club over the coming days.
Malbranque has been sent to Austria with the youth team in response to his refusal to sign a new contract with Newcastle looking his most likely destination.
Middlesbrough have reportedly dropped their interest in the French playmaker while West Ham are refusing to meet his sizeable wage demands.
Coleman's decision to demote Malbranque should provide the catalyst for his departure as Fulham are desperate to prevent him leaving on a free transfer next summer.
In a surprise move, John could follow Malbranque out of south-west London with a £3million fee having been agreed with Birmingham for the Dutch striker.
Coleman recently stated there would be little sense in selling John because of his vast potential but he was frustrated with the 20-year-old at times last season, blasting his reluctance to play in wide positions when required.
Birmingham hold the key to the deal with manager Steve Bruce now having to persuade John to drop down to the Championship.
If the move does go ahead, Hammarby forward Bjorn Runstrom looks like becoming John's immediate replacement with the 22-year-old reportedly in London today to discuss terms.
Coleman has been tracking the Sweden Under-21 international for some time and is believed to have agreed a £700,000 fee with Hammarby.
Crystal Palace full-back Emmerson Boyce, subject of a £1million approach from Wigan, is another player who interests Coleman.
He has also not given up hope of signing Wayne Bridge on a permanent deal after the England left-back spent the second half of last season on loan at Craven Cottage.
It would take around £5million to prise Bridge away from Chelsea but the sale of Malbranque and John would provide the funds.
Zakuani is Fulham's second new arrival of the summer with Jimmy Bullard joining in June as Coleman spends the biggest transfer kitty of his three-year reign, thought to be around £5million. |
