Landzaat completes Wigan move
fr:soccernet.com--Wigan have today completed their fourth signing of the summer with the capture of Holland international midfielder Denny Landzaat.
Landzaat, who has spent the last two years at AZ Alkmaar, has put pen to paper on a three-year deal and follows Emile Heskey, Fitz Hall and young Polish star Tomasz Cywka through the doors of the JJB Stadium.
Latics chairman Dave Whelan is hoping to unveil fifth new face later this week in Hearts defender Andy Webster.
Manager Paul Jewell is convinced Landzaat, who has won 21 caps for Holland, will be a star for the club next season.
After beating Primera Liga outfit Espanyol to Landzaat's signature, with the fee undisclosed although believed to be in the region of £2.5million, Jewell said: 'I think Denny is going to really take to the Premiership.
'I know he had a choice, which makes me even happier that we have got him. He is a midfielder with an eye for goal and is my type of player.
'He has pace, hunger, vision and plenty of international experience, playing both Holland, at the top of the Dutch league and in the UEFA Cup.'
A product of the Ajax youth system, Landzaat scored 10 goals from midfield and as captain of AZ last season on the way to the club finishing second in the Eredivisie.
In turning down another crack at the UEFA Cup next season, Landzaat said: 'I am really happy about coming to England.
'I have talked to a lot of my colleagues in the international team about Wigan and I know exactly what kind of club I am joining and what they have achieved over the past few years.
'I liked Paul Jewell when I met him and what he had to say about the game and the club and his plans for the future.
'Playing in England has always been a big ambition of mine and now I just can't wait to get started.'
Fellow Dutchman and Latics skipper Arjan de Zeeuw believes the club have a bargain.
De Zeeuw said: 'Denny is a player who likes to go forward at the right times and score goals, but can also play as an anchor man.
'We need a player who can come forward from midfield, he has good speed, plenty of energy, and I think it's a great signing.'
The deal for Webster, meanwhile, looks set to be the first of its kind, with the player activating a loophole in new European Union employment law.
Unhappy with his situation at Tynecastle after falling out with owner Vladimir Romanov, Webster served notice of his intention to quit the club over a fortnight before the end of last season, as required.
The ruling also requires players to be under 28, with a year left on a long-term contract and they move outside their current association.
It is likely Wigan will have to pay Hearts compensation, believed to be around £250,000 for the 24-year-old Scotland international who has 20 caps to his name. |
